When you arrive at the airport in Bangkok, some taxis know this hotel by it's former name, THAI HOTEL, while other cabs know it as HOTEL De' MOC.
The hotel looks nice from the lobby, but the elevators and corridors are dated, really dated. The woman at the Front Desk didn't smile when I arrived, just asked for my passport. She had the personality of an ice cube. She announced that the room I reserved wasn't available, and wondered if I would accept a room with two twin beds instead. "No, I'd like a queen size bed." She repeated herself three times: We don't have a queen sized bed available, would you accept a room with two twin beds? "No, I'd like a queen size bed." I opted to wait for them to settle this matter to my satisfaction. She asked for assistance from a co-worker, who found a room with a queen bed. Imagine that.
A side note: the room had been pre-paid in full before I left. I asked to make a change to my reservation (one day less) and made the request four weeks in advance of my arrival. The hotel was happy to change my reservation, but refused to refund one night's stay. Despite repeated requests, the hotel would only provide a credit for a future stay. For these reasons, I was not about to accept anything less than what I reserved (paid for) when I checked in.
The room was spacious and very clean, but I had no natural light. The large glass doors opened to a building wall of grey. No natural light ... More pressing at the moment, though, was the a/c didn't work. I called downstairs and gal at Reception couldn't understand what I was saying. I was placed on hold for a really long time, and an English-speaking staff got on the line. She had housekeeping come to my room. It took the better part of two hours, in and out, in and out, in and out ... ladders, one staff, then two staff, loud thingamagig sucking the dust/dirt blocking the a/c for 45 minutes. Finally, it was fixed. The hotel offered nothing for the inconvenience.
The shower and bath were lovely, and the thick towels were changed daily. The tv was bad - scratch that - it was awful. The reception was zilch, all salt&pepper, multiple sounds, squiggled lines, competing noises in the background, and one English channel whose image could not be viewed. Worst of all (for me) was the room's lighting. I read in the morning, sometimes during the day, before going to sleep ... and was tempted to place the nightstand light atop my chest in order to read. Trying to view details on a map or look at airline tickets at the desk - forget it. Beautiful flowers and complimentary fresh fruit were left in the room, as well.
Paid Internet is available next to the lobby. There is a cafe and tailor downstairs, as well. The tailor sits staring at four walls. He had no business that I could see. The complimentary breakfast was extensive, and good. The hotel provides free tut-tuk to Khao San Road, but it's close enough to walk. Also, free airport shuttle to the new airport.
I wasn't crazy about the staff at Reception. They were barely polite, and not friendly. I listened as they spoke to other guests. They were cold, short, and not terribly helpful. And they seemed to be po'd all the time. Clearly, more staffing at Reception is indicated. The waits were long, both on the phone and in person.
I had to be at the airport by 4:30am for my next flight. I asked Reception about getting a taxi. The woman offered to reserve a cab on my behalf for 500 baht. My jaw dropped. I explained that was more than double what I paid from the airport (including all the airport fees). She advised that the hotel will call the taxi company if I leave anything in the cab and that the cab's arrival is guaranteed. I declined.
I got up early the next morning, had a coffee in my room, and went downstairs to check out. The fellas at the Front Desk were delightful - friendly, funny, warm(!). They were great. Such a difference from the day and evening shifts at Reception. They had my room checked, everything was aye-okay, and they called me a cab. Now get this: a metered taxi to the airport was 140 baht. And the hotel tried to charge me 500 baht the night before. Highway robbery. I tipped the cab driver 60 baht. The shy man nearly hugged me.
There's plenty to like about this hotel. And there's plenty not to like.
