We happened to book this hotel through Booking.Com during our visit to Thailand last month. Chiang Mai is a lovely town and the Empress is an impressive hotel for its class. It perfectly suits the 4 start satus and the services were much much better than the hotels of same star rating in Bangkok.
We stayed there for 1 night and then again for 3 nights after we returned from Chiang Rai. It's location is perfect at a junction of 2 thorough fares. Transport is available most of the time on the door step otherwise, it's only a 3-5 mins walk down the main road where every type of transport, laundry, money changers, restaurants, 7/11s, fruit vendors and clothing stores are available. The other major markets and malls are only 10 mins by tuk tuk or taxi.
The Empress Hotel is 15 mins drive from the Bus Station and takes same amount of time to the Airport (the usual fare of a taxi to either of the places is 120 - 150 bhat).
The deluxe room we were given was lovely with silk and wooden furnishings, a sofa and and upholstered chair, tv and a mini-bar with complimentary water. Fresh flowers and fruits were in the room on arrival, on both occasions. The most delightful part was turn-down service. Every night when we came back to our room after dinner, there were fresh flowers and sleep well cards on our pillows with a box of chocolates (we loved the Tiramiso- Japanese chocolates the most). The complimentries do not end here. When we went for our first breakfast next morning, we were given small wood carved elephants in lovely boxes as souvenir. This gesture was repeated when we went to their one of the restaurants for dinner the first time and again upon our second check-in.
The breakfast was delicious specially the fruit assortment. The two meals that we had in the lobby lounge were perfect and the complimentary fruits after dinner made the day.
At The Empress, every small detail is taken care of like the small silk pouch with plastic bags for sanitary napkins (in the bathroom). At check-in time we were given inernet and complimentary drink coupons. The internet was fast and the drinks were refreshing. The best thing I liked about the place is use of fresh flowers which were placed artistically right from the entrance to lobby, all the restaurants, even in the toilets in the lobby. There was even a hand sanitizer available on the reception counter.
The staff of the hotel goes way beyond the expectations, they are well aware of tourists / guests needs and provided answer to all our queries. The tour desk covers almost all the interesting points even the cooking class which we took the next day.
The view from our room was great and the occasional rain provided a lovely view of the mountains on the right.
Would like to stay again when we go to Chiang Mai.
Take room on higher floors.
