I was very excited about taking this cooking class and was NOT disappointed! They picked us up at our hotels to take us to the school, which is always a plus. Once there we removed our shoes which is custom. I'm ok with that however, keep that in mind for later in the review. We filled out our choices of what dishes we wanted to make then headed off to the market. Great trip to the market. Saw and learned a ton. Loved to see them grinding whole coconuts for us to use later for our sticky rice. Got back to school and were treated to a snack to get us started. Everyone divided up into groups according to what dishes you had selected. Perfect opportunity to meet other people beside the ones in your immediate class. What I loved about this class was you did all the prep and all the cooking. The other part of my trip was to Italy and I took a class there and was very disappointed as the instructor did most of the prep and cooking. Here you do it all. We made curry paste from scratch-mortar and pestal and all!! Made our own coconut milk from the fresh coconut bought at the market-that was cool! Went out back to the woks and cooked it all right there then came back in and ate it. There was so much food to eat I couldn't eat all of it! All the dishes were superb! Fresh in flavor and very Thai Everything you would expect.
My only two comments would be: It made me very nervous to cook the chicken that was part of my dish. We had arrived about 9:30, went to the market and prepped and by the time we got to the wok there was chicken sitting in a small dish for us. My question was: how long has that chicken been sitting in the 95 degree heat, unrefridgerated?? Another student and I thought the same thing and became very worried about eating chicken that had been out in the heat for this length of time. They may be used to it but some of us can not tolerate this. We still had a long vacation ahead and the last thing I wanted was to be sick from this chicken. WE opted out of using it:)
The other thing that was quite bothersome to me was when you had to go to the restroom. Remember, I said you had to take off your shoes at the door as is custom. Yes, we cooked in our bare feet. What was more disturbing was going to the restroom in your bare feet!!! They should provide flipflops for you to put on when entering the bathroom. It was quite disgusting to walk into a not so clean bathroom with bare feet!
Other than that it is an experience well worth it. I loved the class and learned so much. I have made a couple of the dishes upon returning home. They came out good, although not as good as in class. I'll have to practice! Give it many thumbs up. You will not be disappointed.
