We stayed at the Secret Garden for 5 nights while Perry_from_Vancouver (see his post) and his family were there. I can't speak highly enough of the place.
I suppose this environment would not be for everyone. But I would not consider staying anywhere else in Chiang Mai. Your hosts, Peter, Pai, and their daughter Isabel, are genuinely concerned for your well-being, and do everything in their power to ensure your needs are met.
If you want a modern antiseptic impersonal hotel, you may want to look elsewhere. You can use the Secret Garden as a home base to launch daily adventures to all of the Chiang Mai activities, or you can just relax, swim in the pool, and have a daily Thai massage arranged for you. During the scrumptous breakfasts and dinners, you can compare notes with other residents to help decide what to do next.
