This was our third resort in Phuket on our recent trip and not the most luxurious we had stayed in but very nice all the same. I feel semi-bad about the 2 thumbs up I gave but the trip advisor rating summed it up “OK but some problems”.
ROOM
We stayed in a Nalina Jaz room with pool access. Very nice to be able to walk out on to your balcony and just slip into the pool. We spent most of our time on the balcony and in the pool. Room was very nice. Generous in size. Great bathroom with rain-head shower and double basins. Bed however was quite hard (I like a firm bed but this was super firm).
We had a couple with a young child staying upstairs from us and the little treasure stomped and ran around from when he woke up to when they all went out. You can absolutely hear EVERYTHING. Not great when you want to sleep in.
On one morning, the staff started maintenance in the room 2 doors up and that also woke us. When we rang reception, it was too difficult to communicate the problem until we were with them face to face.
SPA
My husband and I tried the spa two days straight – we both loved it the first day. Then on day 2, I got his masseuse and he got mine. His was too soft and mine too painful. On the first day we were both in heaven, day 2 a different story – oh well, he should have said harder and I should have said softer.
FOOD
Restaurant “The Pond” is quite nice. The Thai Beef Salad was VERY nice 140 Baht, very tender beef, delicious salad, quite hot (chilli wise). We also ate at “Hook” restaurant one night. This was also very nice although the wine that we ordered from the main wine list was unavailable due to the restaurant manager being unavailable (the only person with the key and apparently at his second job).
Breakfast was included but we only ate there once – not due to the quality – our first breaky experience was on our third morning there. They will make you a fresh smoothie, have someone cooking the eggs etc and have a decent range of breakfast foods to choose from. I enjoyed the breakfast here.
Room service prices seemed to be pricier than eating in the restaurant.
Happy Hour at the pool bar was sometime between 5 – 7 pm depending on who you spoke to…
A (NOT SO SMALL) COMPLAINT
I have one main gripe that led to the rating I gave this hotel:
I had purchased a new shampoo and housekeeping helped themselves to a decent proportion of it during the daily service. Next we noticed that our Listerine had diminished in colour from very dark to light blue. We sort of laughed it off but made sure we locked up our valuables in the safe. This was obviously a very small discrepancy but it did make us think twice before we left the room to go out for the day. I have written to the hotel and hopefully they will address this issue.
I believe that Alpina still has teething problems but may be a holiday favourite in the longer term.
