As recently as 2010 this hotel was winning international awards and for several years it was my hotel of choice when l visited Phnom Penh. On my last visit my current hotel of choice was full so l decided to revisit the Cara. A bad mistake. The hotel now has a new 'in house' nightclub generating considerable 'in house' noise and a new and expensive Spanish themed restaurant. The nightclub has taken over the hotel bar and restaurant area and these are out of bounds to guests of the hotel unless they pay the admission charge to the nightclub (preposterous!!). The management compounds this dismissive contempt for its hotel guests by withdrawing room service because the staff are too busy attending to the patrons of the nightclub (shameful!!). You do get free access to the bar restaurant area in the morning for breakfast. In the broad light of day the place looks semi derelict - they tell me it is chick vintage decor - and it may be but l am also vintage, but 'old school' vintage and if the place looks drab, dull and dirty you can call it what you will but it still looks drab, dull and dirty. The problem with this style of decor is that under complacent management it can very quickly become dirty. In this place all surfaces other than the table tops are disgustingly filthy (shameful).
The hotel now comes in two separate halves. One half is the devastatingly bad new additions and their dilettante management and the other half is what now remains of the old hotel and here l was relieved to find some positives. Here there is obviously somebody professionally trained and experienced in hotel management and vestages of the quality of the hotels former glory days remain. Everything is nearly as good as it was except that staffing levels are now less than previously and rooms are only superficially clean. There is no doubt from the way you are treated in this half of the hotel that your comfort and satisfaction is the number one and the only priority of the staff. Until the other half of the hotel gets it act together and put the hotel guests as their number one priority the hotel is currently very over rated and grossly over priced. From being a former world beater it is now only mediocre even for Phonm Penh are there are far superior places in a similar price bracket where you will be valued and treated with courtesy and respect.

Room tip: Get a room away from the in house nightclub and eat out - even for breakfast

Nice hotel. Large rooms. Quiet. Only downside for a solo traveller is that hotel is not ideally located and is bit of a walk away from main centre of town where restaurants and shops are. Not the best neighbourhood for single female to be walking in at night to and from town centre.

Room tip: Had an end room which was located right next to staff storage area. Not an ideal location as staff in and out and about quite early if you want to sleep in.

Never expected that we would be welcomed with Sangria in Phnom Penh. Staff was friendly, The room had everything. Also Wifi. In the restaurant you could hear songs of the sixties and seventies. They served tapas and sangria. The food was good, Breakfast was quite nice. Just in front of the hotel you could take the tuk tuk. The hotel is close to the riverside.

Room tip: Room with balcony

On arriving at a new destination I like to explore the surrounds of the hotel we are staying in for orientation and determining what is available locally. In this instance I managed to walk around 15 minutes in all directions to determine that there is nothing around that is easy to walk to. Tuk tuk is the way to go, fortunately they are plentiful and cheap. The hotel has it's own resident Tuk Tuk driver and he is good. The rooms are comfortable, the bed was hard, but that's the same for all Asian beds. The small balcony was good to watch the world go by having a cold beer.
The breakfast was next door at the hotel owned Doors restaurant, there was a choice of three options, the best, in my opinion was the Spanish omelette.
Not a bad hotel, unfortunately the position is not the best..

A bit outside of the city center, located near Wat Phnom, is this very nice hotel. Rooms are modern, clean and offer all services you want. The breakfast is magnificent in the bar 'doors' next to the hotel. It was the nicest breakfast we had on our trip of weeks! Wireless internet is not so good, but hey, what do you want on a trip through Asia!
