“Good Hotel with a Budget Price”

Had a three night stay in the Hanedan Hotel in April 2008.

Pros:

Location. You’re about a five minute walk to the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sophia. Also great views of the Hagia Sophia and Sea of Marmara. You’re route takes you past a corner convenience store where we stocked up on water and bottled pop for the day (and evening on the way back).

Clean. We thought our room and bathroom were very clean.

Price. I had booked a large double room months in advance and Suleyman honored my 55 euro rate (looks like it’s increased now), with an additional 10% discount for paying in cash. So came to around $75 or so.

Breakfast. Great views of the Sea and the Hagia Sophia on the rooftop terrace. Quite a spread for breakfast. Great bread, yogurt, honey, cheese, olives,....The breakfast is probably worth $7-$10 a person if you were to buy it on your own.

Airport transfer. This was an additional cost, but well worth it. The driver was ready and waiting on our arrival, as well as ready to go for our early morning return trip to the airport a few days later.

Cons:
A bit noisy. We were in the Seljuk room, a large double room, one floor above street level, on the street. There was quite a noisy bar next door that was blaring American rock music during the late evening/ early nighttime. Luckily we had some earplugs. Perhaps one of the rooms off the street would have less noise.

Shower. Though clean, you’d get about 20 seconds of hot water, then 20 seconds of cold water, then maybe 10 seconds of really hot water. Luckily the shower had enough room to step away from the water, so you weren’t caught in all the phases. Just kind of annoying.

Bed. Bed was a little thin considering we could feel the springs in the mattress dig into my ribs when we slept. Our large room actually had a full/queen size bed and two twin sized beds as well. Each bed had a mattress pad type thing on them, so after the first night, we pulled the mattress pads from the other two twin beds and added them to our full/queen to provide some additional softness. That did the trick and after that, no complaints.

Overall this place had some pros and cons, but it’s a great budget hotel with a great location. I think the combination of the pros, price, location, and breakfast outweigh the cons. We would probably stay at the Hanedan again if we ever head back to Istanbul.

I really enjoyed the Hanedan Hotel - staying there helped to make my stay in the beautiful city of Istanbul a real holiday. It is a few minutes walk to many of the attractions and I found the staff very helpful. I was travelling on my own for most of my stay and I felt safe walking around (after I learned to say 'no' to those wanting to sell me something), and taking in the beauty of the city. While walking by the sea nearby, I discovered an outdoor gym for adults - amazing! This hotel was very inexpensive, right in the heart of everything. And I was able to take a bus to Taksim Square when I wanted a change of pace.

sooo EZ. made all arrangements online, excellant airport pick-up after the long flight. also stayed at Pennisula, sister hotel across the street, in april '08. the hotel staff is helpful, speaks english, always available ...they stored my extra duffle bag for 3 weeks while i was in central asia. this hotel is for travelers that like a home away from home. breakfast buffet up on the roof....inside or outside in the sun to the view of the bay. these hotels are within a couple blocks of a lot of must-see attractions, museums, cafes, shops and clubs.
this is my choice whenever i am in istanbul!

My wife and I stayed at the Hanedan for 4 days and we loved it!

We booked our reservation by contacting the hotel by e-mail from their website. Suleyman (the co-owner) was great at answering all my questions promptly and arranged for us to be picked up at the airport. I loved the free pick-up service because it made the arrival in a new country after a long flight from San Diego stress free.

When we arrived at the hotel, Suleyman met us outside and promptly checked us in. The room and bathroom were very clean and the maid cleaned them daily.

The location is excellent for visiting all the main sights such as the Blue Mosque, Aya Sophia, and the Topkapi Palace. They were all 5 minutes walk from the hotel. Also, right around the corner from the hotel is a strip of restaurants and shops, which was very convenient.

What made the experience memorable for us was the staff. Suleyman and the rest of the staff were great at answering all my questions about getting around Istanbul and recommended some great restaurants for us to try. I spent a lot of time talking with Suleyman who gave me some great insights into Turkish culture and life in Istanbul. I don't think I would have gotten these insights if I stayed at a Western chain hotel for sure!

Having the free wireless Internet access in the lobby was another great bonus. The Hanedan also offers a great simple breakfast every morning on the roof top terrace. Some of the food is even made by Suleyman's mother which was delicious. And the views of the water from the roof top were beautiful as well.

Overall the personal touch is what I really appreciated and that's why I took the time to write this review (my first ever!).

I had a very pleasant experience at Hanedan hotel, where my wife and I stayed during our 1 week vacation to Istanbul. The location was perfect, less than five mins walk from the Blue Mosque and Aya Sofia, and other popular tourist destinations. The rooms are clean and spacious and some rooms have a sea view. The staff were polite and friendly, making you feel very welcome. Breakfast is served on the terrace which is nice when it is warm outside. The breakfast is simple but satisfying. Also there is a computer downstairs at reception for guests to use, which has free internet access, great for anyone who wants to do some last minute searching on things to do on their stay in Istanbul or just to check your mail.
The only complaint I have is that sometimes the noise from the surrounding bars can disturb your sleep. The window blocks out most of the sound but some can still be heard.
Overall this did not affect our opinion of the hotel and we would still definitely consider staying here again.
