I'm just back from Istanbul and stayed at three hotels: The Sultanhan, the W, and the Hyatt. Three different properties with distinct styles and of the three, the Sultanhan was by far the favorite.
It wasn't just the room, which was large, bright, spotless, quiet, with a good sized bathroom with good hot water.
Nor was it the roof terrace, with a breathtaking view of the Sea of Marmara, the domes and minarets of the Blue Mosque and Hagia Sofia.
Or the location, in the center of historic Sultanahmet, near the tram line.
No, it was the hospitality.
Oh sure, the service in the other two places was impeccable, but at the Sultanhan it felt less "polished" but more genuine. When we came back to the hotel at 2:30 am, famished and the Kitchen was closed, the desk clerk offered to share his french fries with me.
Add the included breakfast buffet (as opposed to the $12 cup of nescafe-yech-at the W), and airport pickup, it was a fantastic value at 190 Euros a night
If you are heading to Istanbul (and if you are reading this, you probably are), the Sultanhan is a great choice.
