When I was sent on short notice to cover the Russian invasion of Georgia last August, I first thought ot staying at the Mariott, but it was prohibitively expensive.
The British House was recommended to me by my newspaper's stringer in eastern Europe and the Caucases. It made all the difference.
Shota, the owner, and his wife and children were warm and friendly, but not invasive. They were extremely helpful with logistical details, and gave me a real sense of what Georgia is like, which I wouldn't have found in a big chain hotel.
One day when I returned from reporting on the frontline at Gori, they had placed a bouquet of white roses in my room, which was a great morale booster.
The internet connection and satellite television were invaluable. The rooms are clean and homey, and there are no two alike. They serve an excellent, copious breakfast. Altogether a great experience! And reasonably priced.
