First I will address safety, as many in my country (USA) are afraid to visit Egypt at this time. Let me say, Egypt is VERY SAFE. I am a 20 something female traveling alone and I felt completely safe during my entire trip. There are several reasons for this; first, Mr. Mohamed Bahaa provided a very capable driver, Mahmoud. He was very kind and took me wherever I wished to go, even if I changed tour itinerary in the middle of the tour. Secondly, my guide Hoda was extremely knowledgable and provided excellent service during my tour. She explained customs, culture and assured my complete safety during the trip. Thirdly, there are police and military guard EVERYWHERE. As such, there is no room for criminal activity in Cairo, not that I found need for all of the police support, as the Egyptian people were all very kind, welcoming and helpful. Everywhere I went, I heard "we love Americans!" They also asked me to tell everyone to please come visit and support Egypt, and I couldn't agree more. As a female, I never felt disrespected or threatened in any way. To the contrary, even strangers would ask if I needed anything, was I okay etc. so, please come visit, this is really the time to do it if you wish to avoid crowds. I was the only tourist in many places including the pyramids! This provided for a very focused tour, but was sad to see no tourists supporting the Egyptian people.
During my tour, I visited the Great Pyramids, Sakarra, and took a felucca ride (private boat ride). The pyramids are as amazing as you might imagine. It is really a once in a lifetime experience to see the last remaining original wonder of the world.
I highly recommend Sakarra! This was my favorite part of the tour. The tomb of King Titi will take your breath away, quite literally. The entire tomb (room) is covered in hieroglyphs and the ceiling is adorned with perfect stars, all look like they were chiseled just yesterday, perfect condition.
I also recommend arranging a private felucca ride on the Nile River. The going rate seems to be about $25 US dollars for one hour and is worth every penny. It was a nice, cool break from the Egyptian heat. During the felucca ride, another boat of Egyptians passed me and they all waved and the women blew kisses, which according to my guide Hoda was meant to say they are happy I'm here.
Hoda and Mahmoud constantly checked to see if I was hungry or thirsty and when I was they refused to let me pay for my refreshments and said they were complimentary from Mr. Bahaa. Speaking of Mr. Bahaa, he called several times to check on me and make sure I was happy. The car used during my trip was modern, clean and air conditioned as well.
I will be back next year to see my new friend Hoda and travel to Alexandria and Abu Simbel. Please take my word that Egypt is very safe for anyone who wishes to visit this amazing country! When you visit, choose Mohamed Bahaa tours and request Ms. Hoda for a world class experience.
Because of the fear many have of traveling and my new found love of the country, I am willing to answer any questions you might have about Egypt and my time here, email me at heatherhausman5 at gmail dot com. I leave Egypt today with a new love and respect for Egypt and its people!
