With terrorist activity aiming at American marque brand hotels around the Middle East, we booked this 12-story, 130-room hotel in the Golden Tulip chain of hotels. Our reservation was for an executive suite with Nile view, however, on arrival we were assigned a room looking onto the facade of a tall apartment building across the street. As an alternative, we were offered a superior room with partial Nile view and were then moved into an executive room with full Nil view the next morning. The front desk staff remained unruffled and pleasant, and was very helpful with information during our one-week stay at the Flamenco. Located in the leafy Zamalek section of Cairo with many embassies , it was but a short , inexpensive cab ride away from city attractions and a little farther afield Memphis, Dashur, and Sakkara. Our suite was spacious with a comfortable king size bed, sitting group, writing desk, refrigerator, in-room safe, Internet connection, and a generously sized bathroom, sporting a bidet. All spotlessly clean. although supply of towels was at times slow in coming. Personnel servicing the the room was very responsive to requests and aimed to please. The balcony offered a panorama view at the houseboats on the Nile and the city beyond, but facing west was not usable in the hot afternoon sun. The suite was air conditioned with in-room thermostat control as was the rest of the hotel. Two restaurants, one on the top floor with panoramic views of Cairo offer deliciously prepared food, and breakfast served buffet style offers something for every taste, including the best French pastry this side of Paris. Low and behold, the desert served on our outbound Lufthansa flight was catered by the pastry shop shop of the Flamenco Hotel. Nearby restaurants we found to offer excellent food were the Five Bells a block away with outdoor seating in a garden setting, Justine's, La Piazza, and Maison Thomas since 1922 making the best pizza in town. Most important, eating everything in these establishments, we were spared the often encountered Nile-belly. Muezzin calling for prayer at day break from the Kitcat mosque across the Nile make for an early wake-up call, as is typical for cities in Muslim countries. Incessant honking of cars in the surrounding streets well into late hours could be an issue for light sleepers as even closed windows do not totally protect from the noise. Clientèle of the Flamenco are largely business travelers and European tourists with a few Arabs and Americans mixed in. All in all, while not perfect and while showing its age in places, the Flamenco met all our needs more than satisfactorily.
