I've stayed here twice now and specifically asked to return the second time.

Yes, this hotel is a bit tired; have you stayed at any other non-U.S.-resort hotels in Cairo (with attendant costs and not at all having the feel of Egypt)?

This hotel has, perhaps, the best morning buffet I've ever had anywhere in the world.

Rooms have been very large, very clean and large bathrooms. The view of the Nile is incredible and this is a very inexpensive hotel for Cairo and it's location within the city.

Very safe and would not hesitate to take young people or groups to get a solid stay at a real value.

I've stayed in some of the world's best hotels. I no longer think that's very important. I never feel like I've gone somewhere else when I'm there. You will know you've stayed in a very old--and historic--Cairo hotel when you stay here.

“Older, but decent.”

Shepheard Hotel

17 Apr 2008

The online price for this place changes hourly!! We watched it go from $160/night to $95/night for the same dates. Just be patient. At $95 it was a steal considering hotel prices in Cairo.

The only negative I would write about is when they lost our room key at the front desk and were VERY slow to resolve the problem. It turned out it was re-filed incorrectly, but I needed to get into my room and we were concerned about someone else having the key. They use a Euro-convention of keeping the keys at the desk instead of guests walking around with them. ANYONE can come up and ask for ANY key at ANYTIME!! They claimed they knew all of their guests by face. IMPOSSIBLE!! It took them 30 minutes to sort through every key to find mine.

The rooms are older, but nice. Clean bathrooms. Decent breakfast. Great location.

I would stay there again (at $95/night).

This was my first visit to egypt, cairo, and staying at the Shepheard Hotel really made it a even more good stay,
when i arrived, around 2 in the morning, there was a long wait for my room to be ready but oh well, it was a fairly large reception area with good security and 24 hour room service.
when i got to my room, i was pleased with my room, it was quite large, bathroom was good size and was very clean(thank god!), and was a comfortable room.
Even though there was a lot of traffic noise, and loud ac, i managed to sleep because i was knackered.
Waking up, i headed down to the breakfast buffet, and sat by the window, which had an amazing view of the nile, which was sooo amazing, the buffet wasnt what i expected,i had never eaten so much in my life, the buffet was amazing, they had all sorts of food for all sorts of people, they had a helpful chef, who made omelette for my father!, and there was also a toaster,i enjoyed the food so much and the tea, the waiters and waitresses were very helpful.
so were the bell boys.
at night, a lady used to do karoke, and there was also ice-cream available at the cafe which i enjoyed!
Also, there is a little shop to the left of reception, which is much cheaper than the one opposite and sells really good presents, next to that and there is also a currency exchange thingy.
i really loved staying at Shepheard and would definetly stay there again,it was really comfortable and worth my money, i cant wait to go again!!

This is a wonderful hotel. The service was great, the breakfast the best I have ever eaten, very clean and the rooms what ambiance.
There is 24 hour service and a map at the front desk which helps you get around. They are very skilled in managing groups of travelers. The food in their restaurant was very good.
A little souvenir shop on the left side of the main reception room has wonderful cheap goodies at better prices than the market. There is a 24 hour bank in the hotel which gives better money exchange rates than you can get in Canada.

I really enjoyed my stay. The hotel has a very British influence coupled with the Egyptian hospitality. The security is sharp and very polite and alert.
It is truly a gracious place to stay. Would always stay there if I visit Cairo again.
It just has that special charm that you do not find in North American high end chains.

This was the second time of staying here awith groups of 10+ people and was again pleased with the overall service. Having read reports on here I would agree that in some respects this hotel is 'tired' - however, what do people expect from one of the oldest hotels in the city? I much prefer this style to the soul-less modern hotel which are the same the world over.

The bell boys, reception staff and bar staff are friendly and helpful, breakfast choice excellent with numerous choices and plenty of fresh fruit. The only slight complaint being sometimes the service of tea/coffee was slow, but then again the restaurant was full. Evening meals are good but I prefer to eat out in the city to get more of the 'local feel'.

Rooms are of good size, I have now stayed in 4 (2 on each trip as I spent time elsewhere in bewtween) and agree that Nile view rooms do have road noise whereas those at the back are quiet but have no view. Personally I prefer a view and dont have a problem sleeping. Rooms vary in size and layout, I have had rooms with large seating area, another with a kitchen, whereas the last one was what i would call standard. All however have big beds, large bathrooms, good facilities and overall very clean.

This is a hotel with character and very convenient for walking into the city, the museum and along the nile. I would say it is a good 3 star by european standards but not far off 4 star.

Would I stay again - yes. Next time taking a large group of international business guests with me (60 people) for a conference
