“Shepheard Hotel, Cairo - January 2008”

Shepheard Hotel

I stayed at the Shepherd Hotel for 3 weeks in January 2008.

LOCATION

The hotel has a good central location, overlooking the Nile and close the the Egyptian Museum, which is only a short 10min walk. Nearby is the internations university, and diplomatic buildings, meaning the area is well kept and has a comfortable environment. The airport is a 40mins taxi ride, and the train station is a 10mins taxi ride.

ROOM

I stayed in a standard room, it very large, clean and spacious, with two large double beds, a small balcony (with a view of the Nile even tho I had no paid extra for it!), TV with several English language channels, air conditioning, lots of wardrobe space, hot water shower, plenty of extra towels, blankets and pillows. The decor matches the hotel as it is slightly dated but well kept and set.

STAFF

Staff are generally friendly and helpful. A desk at the entrance can help with organised excursions and taxis to the airport (a limousine taxi to the airport cost 120EP approx £15GBP).

FOOD

The hotel has a cafe and several restaurants. The breakfast buffet is excellent was included in my room price. There is a selection of salads, fruits, yoghurts, cereals, cheeses, biscuits and breads, and meats, as well as fresh tailure made pancakes and eggs/omlettes. There are several types fo healthy juices, and waiters go around serving tea and coffee to guests. There are local shops selling snacks and water withing 2 mins walk. There are many restaurants and shops nearby, as well as many Western food restaurants nearby such as KFC, McDonals, Pizza Hut, as well as coffee shops.

OTHERS

Wireless internet was available in the hotel lobby at no extra charge. A good room service was available. Rooms were cleaned every day to a good standard.

Overall this was a good value hotel, great location, and a very pleasant stay 8/10

It was an ok hotel, stayed here for 2 nights, conveniently located for Nile dinner cruise on the Scarab boat which was very good, if you prefer a more intimate experience go on the later cruises as there were only 15 people on the whole boat compared to the whole boat being full of Japanese tourists on the earlier trip!

The room was ok but i think we got a rubbish room because we paid slightly less. Good location for museum and so on. Worth a shout if your on a budget, but there are better hotels in Cairo

This is an époque hotel from another era long gone. The lobby, dining rooms and restaurants all have style and features that simply can no longer be produced. The ceilings alone are a work of art that loom 40-50ft overhead. Its rooms are generous, comfortable, and clean. Bathrooms are large (separate rooms for toilet/bidet from bath/shower). Views are unsurpassed. Cairo is a noisy city that makes NY sound like a ghost town, and this hotel is at a busy intersection. I recommend neoprene earplugs if your on the Nile side. As an earlier traveler wrote, if you can get a deal like I did (59euros/night), it's a bargain that's impossible to beat in Cairo.

“Good location, great value”

I only spent one night at the Shepheard and it was perfect for what my sister and I were looking for. It is a bit older than other hotels, but for a short trip it's perfect: it's in a great location and the room and staff are friendly. The free breakfast buffet was fantastic for the level of hotel.

If you're going to be in Cairo for just a day or two this place is great for the price. There's no reason to stay at a more expensive hotel for a short trip.

I've stayed here twice now and specifically asked to return the second time.

Yes, this hotel is a bit tired; have you stayed at any other non-U.S.-resort hotels in Cairo (with attendant costs and not at all having the feel of Egypt)?

This hotel has, perhaps, the best morning buffet I've ever had anywhere in the world.

Rooms have been very large, very clean and large bathrooms. The view of the Nile is incredible and this is a very inexpensive hotel for Cairo and it's location within the city.

Very safe and would not hesitate to take young people or groups to get a solid stay at a real value.

I've stayed in some of the world's best hotels. I no longer think that's very important. I never feel like I've gone somewhere else when I'm there. You will know you've stayed in a very old--and historic--Cairo hotel when you stay here.
