I stayed at the Shepherd Hotel for 3 weeks in January 2008.
LOCATION
The hotel has a good central location, overlooking the Nile and close the the Egyptian Museum, which is only a short 10min walk. Nearby is the internations university, and diplomatic buildings, meaning the area is well kept and has a comfortable environment. The airport is a 40mins taxi ride, and the train station is a 10mins taxi ride.
ROOM
I stayed in a standard room, it very large, clean and spacious, with two large double beds, a small balcony (with a view of the Nile even tho I had no paid extra for it!), TV with several English language channels, air conditioning, lots of wardrobe space, hot water shower, plenty of extra towels, blankets and pillows. The decor matches the hotel as it is slightly dated but well kept and set.
STAFF
Staff are generally friendly and helpful. A desk at the entrance can help with organised excursions and taxis to the airport (a limousine taxi to the airport cost 120EP approx £15GBP).
FOOD
The hotel has a cafe and several restaurants. The breakfast buffet is excellent was included in my room price. There is a selection of salads, fruits, yoghurts, cereals, cheeses, biscuits and breads, and meats, as well as fresh tailure made pancakes and eggs/omlettes. There are several types fo healthy juices, and waiters go around serving tea and coffee to guests. There are local shops selling snacks and water withing 2 mins walk. There are many restaurants and shops nearby, as well as many Western food restaurants nearby such as KFC, McDonals, Pizza Hut, as well as coffee shops.
OTHERS
Wireless internet was available in the hotel lobby at no extra charge. A good room service was available. Rooms were cleaned every day to a good standard.
Overall this was a good value hotel, great location, and a very pleasant stay 8/10
