“Only the view was nice....”

Nileview Bed and Breakfast

21 Mar 2008

... and mohammeds wife Ruth as well (the view times we met her). and...the room was pretty spacious, luckily on the quiet side of the complex.
And thats where the positive part ends.
One morning Mohammed tried to get us out of our room: without just one 'goodmorning' asking us if we would mind to move to the other room (smaller/no bathroom). We did mind... The bathroom by the way was dirty: hasn't been really cleaned for months (if ever) only the little superficail sweep. The breakfast: 1 small omelet a nescafe and a little toast every morning.
Mohammeds businesscard says 'Manager' and that says it all: not someone who likes to pamper his guests or -at least- acts as a good host. We felt like we were just there for his wallet and that's all.
The first day we hired him as our driver and het was not excactly the sociable type, looking like he was bored all the time. The goodbye at the airport was even more UNpersonal: he didn't even say goodbye instead he started a conversation with someone else while he was throwing our suitcases out of his car. Yek! Never go there, better find a cosy hotel..

Stayed at the Nileview and was very disappointed. This is not a bed and breakfast, it is a bedroom in their apartment and it's not even a very nice apartment. the location is terrible - virtually no food within walking distance and absolutely no shopping or tours within walking distance what so ever.

The owner/operator Mohammad basically forced me into a VERY overpriced tour of the pyramids which was not only a great disappointment as it was extremely hurried, but then the guide tried to pressure me into tipping an additional 500 Egyptian Pounds for the lousy tour!! Mind you the tour was 1500 pounds and i was VERY pressured to participate.

Once in Mohammads place, there is literally no escaping his network of "assistants" that he pressured me into accepting - arranging for drivers to meet me at various locations only to find that they were overpriced touts. only one person that he arranged for me was a decent and fair-priced man, the rest were just staring at me like a gigantic dollar sign.

If you want a very nice place to stay in Egypt, go to the Nefertiti in Luxor, I've never had better service anywhere in my entire life. If tyou want terrible serive where you feel pressured to pay up some thugs to give you a pitiful excuse for a "private" tour, by all means go to the Nileview.

“B&B with a difference!”

Dorset. England

We were recommended to stay at the Nileview by fellow B&B'ers who had stayed with us in Dorset. They lived and worked in Cairo, but they had not stayed at the Nileview nor did they know anyone that had! However the website looked good and the email enquiries were dealt with promptly, I guessed that we were dealing with Mohammed because of the occasional odd spelling or use of English and not his Scottich wife, Ruth.
Our arrival to Cairo was smoothed by a guide to escort us through visas and customs to an awaiting taxi and a very interesting ride through the city, or terrifing would be more accurate! It made the M25 look like a country road, so much traffic, much honking of horns, all modes of transport cars, lorries, donkeys, hand-carts weaving either side and pedestrians would just step out, crossing over 5 lanes, very hairy!
We arrived just after 10pm to a warm welcome and a cool beer, much appreciated. The Nileview is on the 15th Floor, a huge open-plan lounge area opening to a balony with views of the river Nile, which was just across the busy road and if you're lucky far reaching views with the pyramids in the distance. Our bedrooms were at the back and there was no traffic noise but we were awokened by the calling to prayer very early in the mornings!
We were well looked after by our host Mohammed who provided far more personal help than I had expected, he helped us to arrange our iterinary while in Cairo, its the additional extras that make your holiday so memorable when you are travelling. He gave us taxi rides to the sites, taking us out in the evenings, we enjoyed local food, the opportunity to shop at the busy evening market, a coffee house experience, and of course the shisha pipe!

We all agreed that this was a different and interesting stay in the busy city of Cairo and preferrable to a 5* hotel. It was also exceptional good value including Mohammed's services.

Reccomend a visit to Saqqara, the oldest pyramids, lunch at the Nile Hilton rooftop restaurant, good place to take a break as its next door to the Cairo Museum, see The Mummy Room. Also the Khan El Khalili Market and take tea in the oldest coffee house in Eygpt, El Fishay and ask Mohammed for an Eygptian take-away!

Many thanks to Mohammed for the memorable stay.

Traveled to Egypt with a friend of mine over Christmas and stayed at the Nileview and loved it. It's in Maadi, just outside of downtown Cairo. There's a metro stop very nearby, so getting to downtown's a breeze, but you don't have the constant noise. Also, since it's across the street from the Nile, you don't have the stench of diesel exhaust either. The rooms are comfortable, but not fancy and the apartment is immaculate. This is a classic British style B&B, so you are staying in someone's home and feel like a welcome guest.

Mohammad was wonderful. We were able to have a personalized tour of Cairo everyday. He arranged for us to be met at the airport and assisted thru passport control & customs. I've traveled a lot and honestly, this was great. I had been flying for some 18 hrs and it was nice not to have to figure it all out. :) My friend arrived at 2am, and he met her too.

We had a driver each day (I'd fractured my ankle 3 days before flying) so didn't have to fuss with negotiating taxi fares in a language in which we didn't have any linguistic base. It was like having a personalized tour each day. They dropped us where we wanted to go and were there when we were ready to leave. Mohammad also picked up our train tickets for us and arranged for a driver to meet us in Alexandria to bring us back to the Cairo airport for our flight out.

Granted, if I hadn't been injured we probably would have done a lot more exploring on our own then we did, but it was a great place to stay and I absolutely would stay there again.

It's going to run you more than a hostel, but will be WAY more comfortable. It's not the Four Seasons, but you definitely get a more local feel than at any hotel.
