“Good VFM in Cairo”

Nileview Bed and Breakfast

24 Apr 2008

My wife and I stayed for 5 nights at the Nileview. We were met at the airport at a completely anti-social hour by a driver arranged by the Nileview. The same chap took us to see the pyramids a couple of days later. It is a fair way out of the centre but that is a good thing as central Cairo is hassleville. We slept soundly with no noise from the busy road outside. Maadi is nearby and that is a very pleasant neighbourhood with good places to eat. You will need taxis to get around so if you have a heart condition better not stay here! Mohammed and his wife were very friendly and he took us to a supermarket to stock up on food etc (we live in Ethiopia). I would certainly stay there again if I went back to Cairo.

“Friendly apartment style B&B in less than ideal location.”

Nileview Bed and Breakfast

21 Apr 2008

My experience at Nile view:
First of all, as extreme budget travellors it was a bit out of our range, but we read such great recommandations that we had to check it out. Very friendly service, Muhammed helped us figure out taxi prices, gave us advice for visiting the pyramids, allowed us a late check out etc.. However, on our arrival we were a bit shocked at the location of the apartment building where they live and found we couldn't do much by foot. The view of the nile was nice (the view of the pyramids was a bit far) but we felt a little strange enjoying the balcony as we really felt we were kind of in their space. Travellors who really enjoy a bed and breakfast, and have transportation (or don't mind taking a taxi everywhere) should really enjoy it.

I booked the Nileview (I had confirmed reservations) and then after traveling thousands of miles to get there the owner (Muhammad) was gone. I was out in the middle of nowhere because that's where this crappy B & B is--NOWHERE and then was told by a security guard that he was gone. (no apologies) They still have a registration fee of mine by the way. I had to find another place to stay at 1am.. This B & B (The Nileview) is a total ripoff. Thieves is what I will call them until I get my money back. The location is horrible in a dirty, disgusting building miles away from anything except for a stinking part of the Nile river. DO NOT even THINK about staying at the Nileview. You'd be far better off in a tent on the side of the road. May I recommend Hotel Luna in downtown Cairo--I enjoyed the Hotel Luna--centrally located, clean and friendly and very honest. The Nileview sux.
P.S. I've now heard many other people say what a terrible place and ripoff the Nileview is.

We would just like to clarify a certain posting that was made re our Bed and Breakfast, we are not thieves and we have stolen nobody`s money! We are listed on many booking websites such as Hostel World. Recently there were major problems with the internet connection to all of the middle east, we were not able to update availability, a customer made a booking but we were full,he paid a max of $20 US to the booking site as a deposit, NOT to Nileview. When internet connection was restored we emailed the customer many times to explain we were full, we also contacted the booking site, they said they would refund him the deposit, we phoned the customer to explain and apologise, no answer so we left messages on his answer machine, we heard nothing, this was over a matter of 2 months. Eventually, just before the customer was due to arrive we had an email from him saying he was coming, we again emailed and said we were full and sent our apologies. I was not there when the customer arrived as I was staying with family as all the rooms were booked out, we were so busy. We feel we did all within our power to notify this customer that we had no availability. The customer also had my mobile number but never attempted to call me. We know that when you are working with members of the public it is hard to please everyone, we feel that the proof is in the pudding, come and stay with us and experience our hospitality! If you come and stay for more than 1 night before the 15th June we will give you your first night free as a goodwill gesture. We look forward to welcoming you to Nileview Bed and Breakfast. “Only the view was nice....”

Nileview Bed and Breakfast

... and mohammeds wife Ruth as well (the view times we met her). and...the room was pretty spacious, luckily on the quiet side of the complex.
And thats where the positive part ends.
One morning Mohammed tried to get us out of our room: without just one 'goodmorning' asking us if we would mind to move to the other room (smaller/no bathroom). We did mind... The bathroom by the way was dirty: hasn't been really cleaned for months (if ever) only the little superficail sweep. The breakfast: 1 small omelet a nescafe and a little toast every morning.
Mohammeds businesscard says 'Manager' and that says it all: not someone who likes to pamper his guests or -at least- acts as a good host. We felt like we were just there for his wallet and that's all.
The first day we hired him as our driver and het was not excactly the sociable type, looking like he was bored all the time. The goodbye at the airport was even more UNpersonal: he didn't even say goodbye instead he started a conversation with someone else while he was throwing our suitcases out of his car. Yek! Never go there, better find a cosy hotel..

Stayed at the Nileview and was very disappointed. This is not a bed and breakfast, it is a bedroom in their apartment and it's not even a very nice apartment. the location is terrible - virtually no food within walking distance and absolutely no shopping or tours within walking distance what so ever.

The owner/operator Mohammad basically forced me into a VERY overpriced tour of the pyramids which was not only a great disappointment as it was extremely hurried, but then the guide tried to pressure me into tipping an additional 500 Egyptian Pounds for the lousy tour!! Mind you the tour was 1500 pounds and i was VERY pressured to participate.

Once in Mohammads place, there is literally no escaping his network of "assistants" that he pressured me into accepting - arranging for drivers to meet me at various locations only to find that they were overpriced touts. only one person that he arranged for me was a decent and fair-priced man, the rest were just staring at me like a gigantic dollar sign.

If you want a very nice place to stay in Egypt, go to the Nefertiti in Luxor, I've never had better service anywhere in my entire life. If tyou want terrible serive where you feel pressured to pay up some thugs to give you a pitiful excuse for a "private" tour, by all means go to the Nileview.
