I stayed for four nights in this Intercontinental Pyramids Park Hotel, following a 3 night cruise on the Nile Crown 2 boat.
I had read various bad reviews about the Pyramids Park on this website (espcially Spanish reviews) and was rather concerned about the so called "wing 9XX".
I remembered that I was a member of the Priority Club (I actually signed up for this as I tend to use Holiday Inn's quite a bit, and Intercontinental is part of the same group... or something like that), so I decided to send the hotel an e-mail (you can find the address on their own website, along with the names of the people in charge of the hotel whom you may be interested in contacting). I basically requested that I was not allocated in wing 9XX, and requested a pool view if possible.
Upon arrival, I was pleased with the surroundings of the hotel, the lobby area, the reception staff, etc. I was allocated a room on the 5th wing, quite far away from the rest of the people who were travelling with our group, who were all allocated on the 1st wing!.
I was actually allocated a bigger room than all my friends were, it was more spacious and it also had a wardrobe acting as a dividing wall between the bedroom and the bathroom. The pool view was also very nice, especially as I learned later on that many of my friends had been allocated in rooms with view of a fence.
The hotel rooms are fine, the beds are comfortable and must be 110 cm wide or there about. Sheets and towells were clean, maid service was fine, bed sheets were turned back ready for bed time and our pyjamas were arranged in various shapes and forms. The bathroom was big, a little basket on the side was full of shampoo, hair conditioner, body milk and shower gel (plus more things), the shower was nice and hot (in fact it could get too hot on some days!) and there were mirrors everywhere. If anything, the bathroom was a little dated and we noticed that the toilet roll holder was in an odd place and there was no toilet brush.
There are plenty TV stations to choose from and there is quite an extensive room service menu available (and not too expensive either!). We ordered room service late at night, and we were told that it would take 25 min to be brought to our room... However, it actually took about 40 min for the food to be served.
I would advise Spanish travellers to take an universal adapater with them... The power plugs are supposed to be the same as in Spain... HOWEVER, some of our plugs fit, and some didn't... The "holes" of the plugs are narrower than in Spain and this had us plugging and unplugging various electrical devices in every single plug in the room.
There is a good hairdryer in the bathroom, no need to take your own.
Breakfast was great, but on some mornings there seemed to be a shortage of staff and clean crockery. One morning we were told that the main breakfast room was full and we were asked to go into another room... this wasn't set out as well as the other one and we had to wait about 20 mins for an omelette!.
There are various shops in the hotel, and yes, you can haggle... However the prices aren't as good as outside the hotel. I ended up paying 500 EGP for a backgammon set that I had seen the day before in another shop, only for 380 EGP. And the asking price started off at about 800 EGP!.
Reception staff are polite and attentive.
A word of warning about getting the hotel to order you a taxi... DON'T!. We were told that taxis that have been ordered by the hotel tend to be more expensive, because the driver has to pay 10% comission on top of what your fare will be... So, in order to avoid this, pay attention to the following...
When you are going out of the hotel, while you are still inside the car park, turn to your right... Keep walking and you will see a gap in the fence... This is where you will find cheaper taxis... There are always loads of taxis waiting here, day and night. Remember to always negotiate your price before even getting into a taxi. We ewere charged 60 EGP to go into Cairo city centre, and I know that that was too much... For a day's tour in Cairo by taxi we paid 30 Euros per taxi... It worked out well for us.
I didn't really see much of the swimming pool, as it was quite cold when I stayed there (you need a fleece, gloves and a scarf if you are going anytime now!). It looked OK, quite big and clean.
The only bad thing about this hotel is where it is located... There is NOTHING there. You need to get a taxi to even go to get something to eat. But if you book knowing this already, then you won't be shocked to find yourself on the edge of a very busy road and with nowhere to walk to!.
