Hong Kong is not my kind of place. You either love it or hate it. I hate it. I have only visted twice in 6 years and on both occasions I stayed at this hotel. The first visit was nothing to write home about but after the recent renovation, the rooms are very chic, almost sexy. I still find it annoying that they put guests in a smokers room without asking. And equally annoying that they give you a room with no view when in fact they have several with views. Are they trying NOT to impress you? After asking for a non-smoking room & one preferably with a view, I was given one. So what were they thinking at reception? Very silly. Breakast also starts very late - too late for business travellers. Dinner was very pleasant in the Chinese restaurant on the top floor... even with a step into the restaurant that has most patrons tripping on it. The staff make you aware of it, in which case why not light it accordingly and save your patrons from embarrassment. The bar, also on the top floor, has superb views. Not sure this is the best place to stay in Hong Kong, as I have not stayed anywhere else but having said that it is without question a luxury hotel with 5 star service and few but silly faults.

“Perfection”

Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong

Possibly the best hotel I've ever stayed in - everything in the room (ipod player, music system, tv, dvd, etc etc) is state of the art, the bathroom's incredible, the service is amazing, it's lush, romantic, the new interiors are divine - I love it. The lobby has come under criticism but hey, that's the way it's always been - learn to live with tradition. I recommend this hotel to anyone. Oh and PS The Mandarin Grill is restaurant heaven.

“Full marks to the MO”

My husband and I stayed at the Mandarin Oriental in Hong Kong for 5 nights in Feb this year. My husband was in HK for work and I tagged along as I wanted to see the city. We chose the MO because it is just two buildings away from my husband's office. I was initially unsure about the location as in most cities the central Business District does not offer much to a tourist. However, the MO is located close to most of the happening areas in HK, such as the Victoria harbour, LKF, the escalators, the shopping malls, and best of all - numerous eating places.

It's pretty easy to walk from the hotel to any of the touristy areas by using the elevated walkways. (The walkways are an amazing feature in HK!) Cabs are easily available from outside the hotel. There is also a bus stop, tram station, and MTR subway just behind the hotel.

The Oriental-themed Premier room was plush and offered a selection of pillows, silken cognac drapes, honey leather club armchairs, Hermes toiletries, iPod docking stations, DVD player, a 37’’ flat screen tv; another 15” screen in the vanity. A pass through closet for delivery ensures minimum disturbance. The glass walled bathroom and toilet were squeaky clean and very elegantly designed and lit.

I'm an extremely difficult person to please when it comes to service. But the Mandarin Oriental gets full marks on this. Room service was simply fantastic! I was starving and requested for quick delivery. Food was delivered in less than 20 minutes by a very polite and courteous staff member. The table was set up very elegantly and efficiently in the room. (Check photo.)

The room was one of the best I've stayed in and the service - impeccable! It's an expensive hotel, but if you can afford it, I'd would recommend you at stay at the MO even if it's for a day.

“More adventure than Hotel”

Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong

As I sit here overlooking Statue Square and Victoria harbour I can only wonder why this amazing hotel has such a lowly rating on the normally reliable Tripadvisor site.

I have been staying here for 15 years so was a wary 'fan' on my return this week for my first visit since the refurbishment.

Service is as good as ever. the rooms are better than before with great modern features and faultless management. This hotel has retained its soul, unlike the rather formulaic Four Seasons which is pretty good but not clasically great.

We have been upgraded to a corner suite. This is truly amazing with the bathroom overlooking the main harbour - weird but brilliant.

The hotel's PR claims the Mandarin is more home than hotel. They are right.

Key points.
It is reasurringly expensive.
Food is outstanding
Service is second to none

Look out for a PS at the end of the week once we have a chance to revisit some or the restaurants and facilities

I recently stayed at the MO for five nights on a combination of business and pleasure, and it really was super.

I concur with an earlier post that the new decor is rather masculine, but it works. I would add that the design of the room I stayed in was very effective. The room featured an alcove with a desk and a reading nook at the far end, enjoying a view of Exchange Square below. It's great for dining, as they can just roll the cart in and turn around the desk chair. You can pull also the curtains on the alcove, which allowed to me work late at night while my daughter was sleeping. We had two rooms in our party and did have a couple of plumbing issues (leaky minibar etc), but they were quickly resolved.

As is so often the case with MO properties, the service was stellar. The concierge desk, in particular, was extremely helpful setting up excellent babysitting and Mandarin lessons for my child.

The spa/fitness is vast, and the ladies area features a quirky pool with stones you walk on to create a refloxology experience.
Fun.

For value in room service, I recommend splitting the Chinese breakfast ... can definitely feed 2 or 3. The congee is the best I have enjoyed in recent memory. Also the small Chinese restaurant upstairs is excellent, with very colorful decor and family-friendly service.

If you (or your employer) can afford it, this is world-class hospitality.
