Stayed at this hotel for 2 nights on our way to Oz. Excellent service and very nice touches on arrival with fruit and tea complimentary. Very well located near to all main Kowloon poi's. Would recommend this hotel

“pay the extra for Horizon Club Harbour View if you can”

Kowloon Shangri-La

Last three reviews of the KSL pretty much spot-on with what we think. We arrived by cruise ship and a cheap taxi got us there in only a few minutes. On the basis that we wouldn't be coming back this way very soon, and because experience has taught us that places have always changed when you DO come back, we'd pulled the stops out and got a Horizon Club (HC) room on Floor 20/21. As soon as they realise you're an HC guest, you're whisked up to the 20th floor for processing (altogether more civilised than the front desk downstairs), before being escorted to your room where they demonstrate all the goodies, electric curtains etc.

Room had a good view of HK island, but not as good as from the Intercontinental nearby (but then that's even more expensive), proving that here, especially, location is everything. If it's views of the famous (and awesome) skyline that you want, then don't even think of staying on the island, which in any event seems way more expensive. We visited the Shangri-La hotel over on HK island and it epitomised the "if-you-need-to-ask-the-price-you-can't-afford-it" principle - especially their Petrus Restaurant on Level 56, from where we took some photos, thanks to their v.helpful concierge.

After a day sightseeing (tip: make sure you take in Stanley and its market; less manic than Kowloon) it was utter bliss to return to the KSL HC lounge for great coffee (from their excellent serve-yourself Nespresso machine) and cakes, and later very welcome drinks and nibbles. These are all complimentary, but then you have paid a small fortune for the privilege!

Tip on arrival: if you're here for more than 24 hours, get an Octopus card on arrival. When you leave you get all the unspent cash on it back from the desk at the airport (do this before you enter the airport proper).

Sightseeing tip: if you take the Star Ferry from Kowloon to Central, there's a free shuttle bus to the Peak Tram terminus (NB tram is cheaper if you pay by Octopus). Also it's worth paying the extra to walk up to the very top if you want some great photos.

Tip on leaving for the airport: there's a free shuttle bus from the front door to the Kowloon MTR station from where you take the superb, fast Airport Express train.

Finally HK is vibrant (albeit one huge building site - it's apparently been like this ever since they opened the new airport and planes no longer have to avoid the tall buildings), it seems pretty safe, but is getting more expensive all the time.

“Another great Shangri-la Hotel!!”

Kowloon Shangri-La

Hi, I stayed in Kowloon Shangri-la for one night in Feb 2008. I also used the hotel's conference facilities. It was my first time using the Shangri-la on Kowloon side though I have stayed at the Island Shangri-la a couple of times.

Overall, everything was great. The lobby was esp. welcoming. The room itself was spacious and well kept. You can tell that it's not new but it's well maintained.

The staff manning the conference rooms we used for our meeting were courteous and prompt with their service.

Breakfast was great with variety - both Western and Asian, which is a nice touch.

There's a Starbucks literally half a minute away. As usual in HK, you can find lots of restaurants and shops nearby. The hotel is located in the Tsimshatsui EAST area which makes connection to the MTR a very long walk underground. There's an entrance right outside of the hotel but you will find yourself walking underground for about 10 mins before you reach the station, so be prepared!

“hong kong perfection”

Kowloon Shangri-La

I stayed with my wife at the Shangri La Kowloon for seven nights at the end of March 2008. We booked our trip with Trailfinders who also took care of the flights (We flew with BA World Traveller Plus--very good--we enjoyed the extra room in the seats--well worth considering for long haul) We arrived at the hotel at 6.45pm and were met as we got out of the taxi by a member of the reception staff, taken straight to our room where a member of room service bought us some chinese tea. It was a good start which only got better. All of the staff were extreamly attentive and always gave superb service including the concierge (very knowledgeable) and the waiters. I know that the hotel is 5 stars but in all my years of travel I have never been made to feel more welcome at a hotel. The location is great for getting around Hong Kong--just a few minutes in a Taxi (very cheap) and you could be at any of the markets/shopping areas or you could walk or take the bus. Its only 10 minutes walk to the Star Ferry which takes you over to Hong Kong Island where you can visit the Peak plus some very swanky shopping streets. We had some suits made at Charms Tailors, just across the road from the hotel, great value and quality.
The real Hong Kong though is always just off the beaten track and its good to take a day just getting lost (its very safe in HK).
Just to sum up The Shangri La is an exceptional hotel, please pay for the upgraded room (deluxe harbour view room) and just enjoy.

“Still a strong contender”

Stayed two nights in a Harbour View Horizon Club room and the view would have been fantastic if it hadn't been so foggy! The hotel is not the newest anymore, but still maintains a very good standard of decor. The Club facilities are a little limited, although the breakfast selection was excellent (the best corned beef hash and poached eggs I have had in a long while). The staff were friendly and professional, and the limo service was a good addition to make our arrival and departure smooth and problem-free. Ate at Shang Palace for a dim sum lunch one day and was impressed with the standard - and most of the fellow diners were locals which is always a good sign of course. If I were to stay Kowloon-side again I would definitely consider the Shangri-La once again.
