We stayed here for 10 days in Jan/Feb 07 and were pleasantly surprised.
This is undoubtedly a tourist class hotel with few comforts, but it is kept very clean and the staff are friendly and helpful.
Our rooms were on the 24th floor and we were actually given complimentary upgrades to their Mini Suites which included a fridge and small kitchen area with cooktop (no pans or utensils were provided). They were far enough from the street that they were pretty quiet and had decent light blocking curtains for trying to get over the jetlag. As an added bonus, we also had a fairly impressive harbor view. Be sure to request a Non Smoking room - while hong kong has banned smoking in all public places, you can still get hotel rooms that allow it.
The hotel has heat and airconditioning, but unfortunately you can't open any of the windows. The showers were good, and were tall enough for me (6ft) to stand under. The bed was very hard by US standards, although they provided an extra blanket that we laid under the sheet which improved things a little.
Internet is available although it runs about US$10/day (we got a discount on the week). It's provided through a wired connection so isn't so useful for those of us with Wifi phones & pdas.
It appears that the pool and resturant are permanantly closed. The hotel does offer a self-serve laundry (HK $15 per wash or dry) and a small business center. There were two english tv stations (BBC World was one of them).
We found the location to be pretty convenient. It's about a 5-10 minute walk to the North Point MTR (Underground) station, and from there it takes maybe 15 minutes to get to Central or around 25 minutes to get to Kowloon.
Since we had quite a bit of luggage, we took the airport express train to Hong Kong Central and then took a cab to the hotel. Be sure and have the address and map handy, there is a "Newton Hotel" nearby and we were almost dropped there a couple of times. It should be between HK$40-60 for that journey.
There are a lot of amenities nearby, including a large street market that caters much more to the local population. If you aren't unnerved by the meat hanging on hooks and fish flopping around then you can find some good prices on clothes and jewelry.
There are plenty of small bakeries nearby, but for a western style coffee the best we could do was one of the McCafe's on Kings road.
We booked as part of a pacakge through Go Today and got 10 nights hotel + flights out of Denver for US$1100/pp. That must surely mean that the hotel room ran about US$50/night and at that price it's an excellent deal.
