Myself and my Girlfirend stayed for 3 nights at the Silvermine only last week. We arrived tired from an early flight from Singapore and arrived at midday at the Silvermine. Any fears of not haing a room available at this time for us to get some much needed sleep were quickly dashed upon arrival. Not only was there a room ready and waiting for us we were also upgraded free of charge to a room in the hotels new wing. Excellent customer service or what!?
The room itself was average in size and offered a part view of the beach. Room was clean as was ensuite. Some facilites in room perhaps lacking. No coffee or 'western' teas bags on offer and only limited TV choice.
The hotel also had a large swimming pool in its grounds, though we never had chance to use it. Breakfast was inlcuded in price and was overall so-so. Wide range of foods on offer though quality not as good as would have liked.
We did eat in their restaurant on our first night and their evening buffet fared a little better than breakfast. The food was of good quality and deal included unlimited beer.
Once you have gotten used to the idea of not staying in Central Hong Kong, the location of the Silvermine is handy enough for the towns few attractions. Mo Wui itself is ok. There are a few restaurants (including ubiquitous McDonalds) and shops nearby. Try the local pizzeria restaurant in the town square, excellent food at reasonable prices.
Lantau, the island where the Silvermine is located is a bit of a gem. Local buses can be caught from the Centre of Mo Wui to various locations around the island. We went to see the Big Buddah and the monastery which is a must see and also went to Tai-o situated at the far side of the Island. Tai-o is a bit like stepping back in time with its stilted houses and atmospheric market streets - as far removed from Central Hong Kong as you can imagine.
Overall the Silvermine provided the foundations for a restful final 3 days to what was a 16 day jaunt to the Far East. Would consider staying again if in the area.
