I have stayed several times at Grand Hyatt Jakarta, back in the older days and after its recent refurbishment that transformed it in the same league with other Grand Hyatt's new format (contemporary, high-tech and design-based).
This is no exaggeration, but the Grand Hyatt Jakarta is on-par with the best of any Asian Hotels. It just has yet to get the same publicity and exposure, as Jakarta is by no means a ‘tourist destination’. I have stayed at the Peninsulas, Four Seasons, Ritz Carltons across Asia, and Grand Hyatt Jakarta is definitely on the same league, if not better.
Location: In a sprawling city like Jakarta with the worst traffic and less-than-friendly pedestrian, you want to stay right in the middle of everything. The Grand Hyatt has the best location as it sits atop Plaza Indonesia (the Ngee Ann City/ Takashimaya of Jakarta; The Suria (KLCC) of Jakarta). It has an extensive number of luxury boutiques, cafes, department store and a newly opened cinema housed in a landmark new extension building, which also houses FTV (Fashion TV) Bar and Hard Rock Café.
Lobby: Grand Hyatt does everything in a ‘grand’ way. The lobby is grand, vast and dramatic. It is on-par with the lobby at Grand Hyatt in Hong Kong and Taipei. A series of grand staircase leads you up to the Lobby level that houses the reception area, Grand Café, the Grand Hyatt Galleria (shopping arcade) and Jakarta’s only Hermes boutique. One level above is the ultra-modern bar and a restaurant called C’s whose designed is inspired by the Mezzanine at the Grand Hyatt Singapore. These are truly the places to entertain clients, self-indulgence or extravagant wedding.
Service: As with other Indonesian hotels and resorts, service is excellent, personal, efficient and warm.
Rooms: Clearly the largest standard rooms anywhere in the world, where it measures 50m2 (Grand Hyatt Hong Kong 38m2, Peninsula Palace Beijing 34m2, Island Shangri-La 40m2, Oriental Bangkok 40m2). Only the Four Seasons Jakarta (55m2) and the Dharmawangsa Jakarta (66m2) could rival its size. You first enter a foyer with walk-in wardrobe by the side and bathroom on another. Then you enter the main bed/living/working area with 2 bay windows. The newly renovated rooms are fresh and contemporary with plenty of wood and glass. The TV is located in the middle of the room, which can be rotated to suit angle from the bed or the living/working area. There is a comfortable chair with ottoman, which replaces a 2 seater sofa and a chair arrangement from previous design –which was far more comfortable back then!. Marble bathroom is large and has a good stock, with carved Balinese sliding doors.
Opt for room facing the swimming pool amidst 4 hectares of landscape gardens. Rooms facing the ‘Welcome’ roundabout are nice but on daytime is filled with no other than traffic congestion!.
Dining: The buffet at Grand Café is lavish, although the JW Marriott’s Sailendra has the best quantity, quality and value. Opt for a table on the unique ‘Conservatory’ with glass skylight and view towards Jakarta’s main thoroughfare. The Fountain Lounge has one of the best view (Welcome roundabout) and good food albeit expensive. C’s are more up market with hip interiors and creative foods but very pricey.
Facilities: One of the best in Jakarta. The swimming pool area is the best with 43m lagoon shaped pool and smaller pool set amidst landscaped gardens. On the side are several individual ‘Bale’ with cushioned sitting area housed on a Balinese structure. You would have thought you are in one of Bali’s resorts. The health club is excellent and comprehensive. There is even a 800 meter jogging track, few tennis courts and badminton court! You have to see it to believe it.
Overall, the best hotel in Jakarta; one of the best in Asia. The only downside is getting to other places in town due to the unavoidable traffic congestion, which is a pre-requisite Jakarta’s experience. No one escapes this.
