The Shangri-la is a superb, top class, hotel. The rooms are excellent, as is the staff, and quality of service. Unfortunately, we could only stay for one night on a stopover on the way to Australia.

It’s a 30 minutes taxi ride from Changi airport to a friendly welcome from the efficient staff on arrival. Despite our early arrival (11am), check-in with our prebooked voucher was a breeze. Our heavy luggage was whisked up to our deluxe room by a friendly bellman (with a bright red jacket and pill box hat) who delighted in showing us all the room’s facilities. The room in the Garden Wing on the 10th floor was spacious with chairs, a desk, broadband, a large well-appointed, bathroom, and a comfortable bed. The gardens are really nice with luxuriant flowers and other vegetation; we did not have time to use the nice swimming pool.
The buffet breakfast offered good, wholesome, hot and cold food with a wide variety of choices, including good back bacon (not the cheap streaky/fatty stuff offered by US hotels). Really excellent and hassle free. Had a sumptuous Cantonese meal at the hotel’s (expensive) Shang Palace restaurant. Truly a culinary experience with excellent service.

Although you are near to Orchard Street and various shopping malls (Singapore prices are not that cheap!), the hotel’s suburban location means a lot of (cheap) taxi rides. In the one and half days we spent in Singapore, we visited Chinatown (don’t miss the China Town Heritage Centre on Pagoda Street, which provides a poignant portrait of the territory migrant history, the Islamic Mosque (Don’t expect much if you have visited Istanbul or the Middle East), and Little India. Not having visited India, we were enthralled by a visit to the Sri Mariamman Temple temple on South Bridge Road and the Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple on Serangoon Road in Little India, where we witnessed a remarriage ceremony, which involved the man and woman being doused by successive dunks of water, and numerous believers receiving “blessings” from the numerous swamis.

Expensive but good value for money given the quality and location of this hotel. The staff is excellent: every time we passed a staff member, we received a friendly smile and solicitation.
We would have liked to stay longer and were sorry to leave. One negative: no free in-room internet. Given the cost, this is rather sad.

Just returned from 4 days in Singapore and stayed at the Shangri La.
A good hotel but expensive for food so beware of the extras. Try and get a deal on the cost of breakfast - the breakfast is amazing- about 7 areas serving international food!
I opted to stay in the Garden wing which is a bit dated but near the pool with better views of the beautiful gardens.
The tower wing and valley wing are very swish, but you could be anywhere and they are not worth the extra cost in my opinion (I was shown all three to decide)
the pool is wonderful and service is good. The room key system is a pain (kept failing) and you need it at all times even to activate the lifts.
I recommend this hotel.

I stayed here for my honeymoon and it was a fantastic time. We were only there for 5 days before travelling up to Thailand but I wish the time had gone slower. It is by far the best hotel I have ever stayed at and I have stayed at some very nice hotels. Everything from the grand entrance, the staff and the room to the breakfasts. It was all fantastic. Get breakfasts if you can!!! they are great only downside maybe TOO MUCH to choose from. We had an amazing time and the room service is a snip for the food and service you receive. I stayed at Raffles the year before but this wipes the floor with it. Check out the Blue restaurant..............

My wife and I stayed 4 nights at the Shangri-La in March. I have stayed there twice before and we had already stayed at the Shangri-La in KL on this trip - I find the staff at Shangri-Las generally absolutely fantastic.

As ever, the welcome on this visit was great and the entrance hall is fabulous. Stayed in the Tower wing and took up the option of the Horizon Club, which gives you access to a lounge on the 23rd floor and includes breakfast and evening drink/light food.

Our room was fantastic - it was huge, luxurious, very comfortable and very peaceful. Breakfast was fine, I wasn't wowed by it but it was nice. Evening food was fantastic though - canapes that were creative and delicious and well worth the upgrade just for them.

The pool is surrounded by lush foliage which makes a good change from the standard pools, but it did feel a little cramped for me - not a lot of room between people, pool and plants.

The location of the hotel was further away than I remembered from previous trips - its in a residential area off Orchard road and about 20mins walk from the MRT, which in the heat humidity and sometimes rain can feel quite a long way.

Whilst in Singapore we did go to a few other hotels for food and drink and by comparison the Shangri-La is starting to look its age. I certainly wouldn't dissuade anybody from going there, but next time I think I'll try somewhere else, Singapore is changing fast and I suspect newer may be better

“Great Stay”

We stayed here for three nights coming back from our honeymoon in Bali on our way back to NY. I lived in S'pore when I was younger, and have been to Singapore more times than I can count. However, this was the first time for my husband. More than anything I just want him to have a good experience. All I have to say is, the Shang have helped made my husband's first trip to S'pore enjoyable and memorable.

The positive
- Very warm greeting and service upon arrival and throughout the stay.
- We booked the deluxe room at the Valley wing and they upgraded us to a suite, when they heard we were on our honeymoon. Also gave us a lot of free perks.
- Great size, very well furnished, and great amenities.
- Perfect location, 15 minute walk to Orchard. Close enough but not right in the middle of the craziness. I read someone wrote that it's a 30 minute walk....I'm not quite sure where they get that time from.
- Great selection and quality of breakfast at the Line. Love it!!
- Love the free Champagne and canapes on the lounge
- The hotel staff is very friendly and always eager to help

The negative
- The concierge service is very inconsistent. Some of them are very knowledgeable and some of them have to keep on checking with other people for everything and unable to give you a straight answer. They also screwed up on one of our dinner reservations, but we were still able to get a table in the end...so no big deal.
- The other breakfast room (other than the Line) called the Summit room?? or something like that. In any case, for the summit room, they do not allowed anyone wearing sandals or shorts. I find this to be a bit too much, too forced an effort to make the Valley Wing more posh than it already is.
Don't get me wrong, my husband I always dressed up for dinner, no matter where we are in our travels. As a matter of fact we love dressing up. But for breakfast and lunch, especially if we're travelling in a hot + humid country and have a full day of walking and sightseeing ahead of us, we like to wear our sandals and shorts. It seems silly to make your guests dress up for breakfast, then they have to go back upstairs to change into their comfortable everyday clothes. To make long story short, we went to the line everyday for breakfast.

Other than that, the Valley wing at the Shang is very impressive and beautiful. I recommend anyone in staying there, but be sure to book the Valley wing. The main wing is still nice, but looks exactly as it did in the 80s. It's in need of a face lift, especially compared to some of the newer and grander hotel around S'pore.

But just as I remember it as a child, I still love the Shang!
