“A great little find with no problems whatsoever....”

Hangout @ Mt. Emily

We booked a 3 night stay at the Hangout - Mt Emily whilst in Singapore as part of our 7 month round the world trip.

We had been recommended this hostel/budget hotel when looking at various forums on the web, and with the Mt Emily website selling itself extremely well we thought we'd give it a go. We managed to get a rate of $78 a night, which was within our budget but a little on the high side compared to other comparable properties.

Arriving in Singapore in an absolute downpour it was about a 45min taxi ride to the hotel, but it could be done in half that time with better weather. As expected the hotel was at the top of a hill with good views over the local area.

Check in was smooth and we set off up to our room using one of the 2 lifts available. When arriving it was clear that this hotel was a little different to the average run of the mill budget hotel, very funky decor, friendly outgoing staff and a good vibe.

The room was very nice. We expected a bed, cabinet and desk and a bathroom area and that was what we got. There was a rail for clothes etc but don't expect lots of storage space, it is a very basic room, one up from a hostel room I would say. Still this room had air-conditioning and with it being 35c+ outside, this was very welcoming. The bathroom was nice if a little small but adequate.

One of the major benefits is the use of free internet on one of the 4 PC's in the chill out room. A nice touch....

Location is good. There are obviously mobility issues with this hotel with it being on a hill. We never found the walk up a problem though, although we sometimes had to stop for breath on occasions. It is about a 10min walk down to Little India & a bit further the other way to Orchard Road etc...you will also find underground stations similar distances away.

All in all we liked the location and the funkiness of the hotel, there are probably better locations but for something different the Hangout @ Mt Emily is highly recommended.

As for Singapore itself.....amazing!!!!

I checked into this hotel on January 8, 2007. I wanted to stay for 5 nights but after a lousy treatment by their check-in staff, Taufik (he had long hair, wore a headband at that time), I forced myself to stay the required 2 nights - or they will charge me for 2 nights anyway if I were to cancel. More bad things await me...

1. A line of ants on the door.

2. Hair in the bathroom.

3. Pubic in the bathtub!

4. No regular soap, just liquid soap for your hands, body and hair.

5. Asked to change room in the morning, got a bigger room this time on the 5th floor, more hair on the night table! And the shower curtain in both rooms looked so gross!

If the don't mind the above, don't mind walking 10 minutes from the main road up a really steep hill to your hotel, don't mind paying over S$88 (and over S$100 on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays), I guess you could give this hotel a shot, this hotel is unlikely to be the worst in Singapore.

To be fair, their free breakfast is quite decent - for a budget hotel - at least for me on Jan 9.

Would I stay at this hotel again or recommend anyone to stay here? A BIG NO. For a 2-night stay, I would bet on a much newer hotel nearby - much nearer the main road. No hills whatsoever to climb - for 20-30% less too! If I remember correctly, that hotel is called Hotel 81 Selegie. To be sure, get more details at the forum page. Of course if you can afford it, you should stay away from budget hotels like Hotel 81, Frangrance and so on too. The money you save on these budget hotels has a price. For me, I could NOT sleep my entire 2 nights at Hangout, their bedsheets were like full of bedmites!!!
