Have spent so far 6 days in the hotel (of a 10-day stay).
Rating of above average = above average when compared to other local hotels.
When compared to your "average" hotel in the third world, it can be said that rooms are cleaner than average.
Spartan conditions: one TV with one (TVE) channel, functioning A/C, some wood furniture and creaking beds, nothing else.
About 12 hotel rooms. If you show up last, you get the worse room available. Had to move from first assigned room because a bar next to the hotel had very loud prostitutes and clients (non-locals working in the oil and associated service industries) exchanging "pleasantries" from midnight to 0600 hrs. No place to hang clothes. Moved to an ocean view room as soon as onen was available and was able to sleep. After 6 days and 5 nights, I have yet to see a maid (luckily, we brought our own towels). Location: beautiful view of Malabo Bay and "port" and is close to a very nice town park (Spanish colonial style). Safest place of 25 African, Latin American, Caribbean and European coluntries visited in my lifetime. Daily cost is CFA57,000 (about USD$140, at current exchange rate of 423 CFA per USD). Restaurant has very nice view of the ocean and is slightly more expensive than equivalent facilities. Hotel reservations? If someone living in the island will do you the favor, he/she goes to hotel counter and asks to reserve you a room about 10 days in advance, then shows up again 2-3 days before arrival to verbally "reconfirm" the reservation. Your part? Pray that there's a room available when you arrive. I don't know how reservations work for someone with no contacts on the island. No need for credit cards (none is accepted). Hotel wants CFAS, will accept Euros, may accept US dollars. Strictly a cash economy; banks don't "work" well here, so don't think about going to a banking facility because they don't exchange currency. Buy local, bottled water to brush teeth, etc. Frequent, extended blackouts, island wide, but hotel has working power generator (good, good thing to have, : - )
Bioko Island is for monkey lovers, people who want to get away from civilization, want to go way out of the trodden path or are making big money from oil industry.
