When you stay here - and do stay here if you can - ask for a room that overlooks the square. Then, when you need to put your tired feet up after exploring this wonderful city, you can pull the chairs up to the window, pour yourself a glass of Albanian red wine from the supermarket and gaze out at the miracle of the unregulated six lanes of traffic making its way around without colliding or hitting any of the pedestrians that just step out unannounced or the cyclists riding contraflow against the whole spectacle.
The rooms in this ex-soviet style thoroughly refurbished hotel are nothing to write home about in themselves. They are spacious enough and very clean with comfortable beds and and the usual mod-cons. What makes it is the location, waking in the dark to the morning call to prayer across the square or the short stroll to the museum or opera house - you really get the feeling that you are in the centre of things.
Also, the staff are brilliant - utterly professional and very warm and friendly to tourists. And we loved the breakfast... :) In fact, this place has got to win the award for best breakfast buffet ever! Everywhere we've stayed since has, no matter how good, always been a little disappointing because we set our breakfast hopes to International Tirana standard. It is grand exhibition of cold and cooked meats, cheeses, the fruits of Europe, eggs-any-way-you-want-them with a chef on standby if you fancied an omelette to go with the platters of chips (that's french fries, not crisps) largely neglected by foreign politicians and diplomats. Then, if you have room, there are the freshly baked breads and cakes and sweet pastries. And if the weather's nice you can take it all out onto the balcony and eat your breakfast watching early morning Tirana. Pure bliss.
