We had the choice to stay either in Casa Santo Domingo or here and we are glad we stayed here. This is not a knock on Casa Santo Domingo because it is also a beautiful place, but there were several factors that made us really glad we stayed here instead:
1) the location - El Antano was near the center of the town, just one block from the Arch, and a few blocks from the Plaza (centro parque). everything is in easy walking distance. there were many nice restaurants, shopping, mercado all near by.
2) great rate - the rate for the hotel was nice considering everything we liked about the place. If you are staying for several days, try asking Ana for the cash rate which can be lower than the published rate on the web site.
3) wifi included - there was free wifi at the hotel. the web site said there is a fee but it turned out to be free. Not sure if this will change in the future, I hope it doesn't.
4) great staff - for the most part, the staff was friendly and helpful.
We had a incident which the cleaning staff came knocking on our door in the morning repeatedly asking about the hairdryer we borrowed the day before. It was not pleasant to be disturbed during sleep but we let it go. We later hand written a "Favor de No Molestar" sign and taped it to the door and we were not bothered again.
5) beautiful hotel - it was quaint and generally quiet, just the way we liked it. The colonial architecture and decor was just as beautiful as the rest of the town. really enjoyed the courtyard. The rooms were not fancy. If you are looking for high luxury this is not the place but it was clean and very comfortable. The main complaint we have about the room was that there was no AC or fans. We stayed during May so while it can get a bit hot during the day, fortunately as the night comes it cools off by 10 or 11 PM. Before 10 PM however it can be warm still in the room. There was a window that helped the ventilation but the privacy and security is lost. We can't keep the window open while we were out to cool off the room fearing that someone can get into the room easily. A couple of other things that lacked in the room were the lack of hair dryer and cloth iron. We had to borrow from the front desk for these items, it was a minor inconvenience, not a big deal however.
Overall, we had a great stay in Posada El Antano as well as in Antigua.
