We had the choice to stay either in Casa Santo Domingo or here and we are glad we stayed here. This is not a knock on Casa Santo Domingo because it is also a beautiful place, but there were several factors that made us really glad we stayed here instead:

1) the location - El Antano was near the center of the town, just one block from the Arch, and a few blocks from the Plaza (centro parque). everything is in easy walking distance. there were many nice restaurants, shopping, mercado all near by.

2) great rate - the rate for the hotel was nice considering everything we liked about the place. If you are staying for several days, try asking Ana for the cash rate which can be lower than the published rate on the web site.

3) wifi included - there was free wifi at the hotel. the web site said there is a fee but it turned out to be free. Not sure if this will change in the future, I hope it doesn't.

4) great staff - for the most part, the staff was friendly and helpful.
We had a incident which the cleaning staff came knocking on our door in the morning repeatedly asking about the hairdryer we borrowed the day before. It was not pleasant to be disturbed during sleep but we let it go. We later hand written a "Favor de No Molestar" sign and taped it to the door and we were not bothered again.

5) beautiful hotel - it was quaint and generally quiet, just the way we liked it. The colonial architecture and decor was just as beautiful as the rest of the town. really enjoyed the courtyard. The rooms were not fancy. If you are looking for high luxury this is not the place but it was clean and very comfortable. The main complaint we have about the room was that there was no AC or fans. We stayed during May so while it can get a bit hot during the day, fortunately as the night comes it cools off by 10 or 11 PM. Before 10 PM however it can be warm still in the room. There was a window that helped the ventilation but the privacy and security is lost. We can't keep the window open while we were out to cool off the room fearing that someone can get into the room easily. A couple of other things that lacked in the room were the lack of hair dryer and cloth iron. We had to borrow from the front desk for these items, it was a minor inconvenience, not a big deal however.

Overall, we had a great stay in Posada El Antano as well as in Antigua.

This is a gem within Antigua. While obviously not 5 star accommodations, this was a quiet, charming hotel with excellent staff. You feel very comfortable and safe in this hotel. Breakfast was excellent. Within walking distance to MANY sites and restaurants. Staff will bend over backwards to help you in any way.

“Lovely Small & Quiant”

My husband and I stayed there for a week in the Master Suite which was separate from all the other rooms. It had a view of the Volcanoes and a small eating area where you could open the large window and have coffee or breakfast if you wanted. It was spacious compared to some rooms but I loved it for its privacy and every night they lit candles going up the stairs and set the fire if you wanted one. Breakfast was very good, the staff pleasant and helpful. Close to the Arch, good restaurants, great cigar bar across the street, excellent deli across the street also. Would I stay there again? - Definitely !

We arrived a few days after Christmas, and were pleasantly surprized... this hotel is lovely! The inn is very small, only about 10 rooms. Obviously a converted house, with all the guest rooms off a small courtyard in the rear of the building. The lobby, reading room and guest rooms were all decorated in good taste with charm, very rustic feeling with lots of candles. Our room was comfortable and generally clean with twin beds. We would have preferred a king - we saw some of the other rooms that looked great - but they were sold out so we had to stay put. All the rooms have windows that look out into the courtyard, so if you are looking for privacy, you might want to keep this in mind. Also, our shower could have been updated, it was the only part of the experience I would say was barely satisfactory. There was filtered water dispenser in courtyard which was great to have access to, I used it alot. Breakfast in the dining room was basic, eggs and rolls and I forget what else. Overall, it has such great ambiance, the hotel felt very true to the charm of Antigua and was within short walk to everything. I would definitely recommend!

    • Liked — Rustic charm, nicely decorated, short walk to everything - 2-3 blocks off main square.
    • Disliked — Lack of privacy (although not an issue for us), shower could stand to be updated.
