Hotel Kompas is fine. It won't blow your socks off or anything but you won't be disappointed either even if you might reasonably expect a little more for the price.

Room size is good, everything is kept clean and staff seem friendly. Bathroom is a tad small and antiquated-looking, but is generally fine. One thing we didn't like was the degree to which you could hear neighbouring guests using their own bathrooms but we weren't overly disturbed by noise overall. It would only have taken a few unruly guests to spoil it for us but thankfully there were none.

There's a good laundry service as well which we found useful during our stay. There's an English-language news channel and movies on the local channel are in English with local subtitles.

Location-wise, it's a decent walk to the Old Town (30-40 mins) and obviously quite quick to get there on the buses (10-15 mins). We walked it once but there's not much to see on the way in to the old town so took the bus every other day. The bus stop is about 10 minutes walk from the Hotel but avoid making eye contact with the people selling boat trips - theres loads of them who simply can't wait to give you a brochure!

Hotel reception is - unusually - one floor beneath road level (Kompas is built on the sides of a steep hill down to the sea) so you might have to struggle down with bags when checking in. There's nine floors in total with the bottom floor housing the restaurant and bar which is lovely in nice weather as it's right on the edge of the bay overlooking the water. There's also a nice balcony near reception overlooking the bay.

The breakfast room is the floor above the restaurant and is big and spacious with huge windows open to the sea but we quickly tired of the repetitive fare on offer, despite it having decent variety on the face of it. There's always alot of things there that you won't eat so you generally eat the same every day.
Watch out for the wasps crawling round the platters of cold meats. Disgusting - and a right turn off every morning, why they don't enclose the meat in a protective case with doors I don't know. And if you leave your bread unattended there's some cheeky birds only too willing to swoop and peck away at it but we thought this was actually endearing.

The food is typical Dubrovnik, the usual dishes but probably a little better standard-wise than some other places we ate. In nice weather the sea-side dining area is lovely to sit at.

There's internet available at reception - one PC only - for 20Kn a half hour, or just under 3 euro approx.

It's a decent hotel overall but I would neither rave about it nor rant about it.

I stayed at hotel kompas for 10 days and wasn't impressed. The location was great, but the room was old, damp and not very pleasant. HOWEVER, the staff was extremely nice and helpful. Especially Daniel and Adrijana who worked downstairs in the restaurant (which was pretty good.) They went above and beyond to help us out whenever we needed anything!!!

I stayed for two weeks at this hotel with my boyfriend and two friends, and you totally just pay for the location. I'd say the hotel was built in 1950 and has not been redecorated since then. Our room (a double i.e. two singles pushed together) was so old and smelt musty and damp. We paid extra for the a "sea view " and you can see for yourself on the attached photos. The bathroom was just disgusting, old and not very clean. Also there was no kettle or coffee making facilties, no iron/ironing board and the balcony also very old and we just wouldn't sit on the chairs. Luckily when you go on a sun holiday you dont spend much time in your room. The four of us paid €1,400 each for flights and accommodation. I have gone to many hotels in European and I know the star rating system is totally different but this hotel only deserves a 1 star from us! The only good thing was the location and the staff were very friendly and had good English. I would not recommend this hotel to anyone!

Just spent a week in Hotel Kompas. Very nice location as main promenade is pedestrianised so no worries of mad drivers! Staff very friendly and very serious about their work. Room service was good although bit stingy on the toilet roll we found!! If you like your English cuppa then bring your own t-bags as we found local tea pretty horrid, UHT milk is as fresh as you'd get!! Plus we had a mini bar in our room which we didn't touch, far better would've been a kettle!
Music entertainment every night was amusing, cringing at times but nevertheless something to relax with a drink to. Went on til 11.30 every evening but our room was on the side of hotel so didn't hear a thing at night. Air conditioning was a god send as the nights were very hot!
Pool very nice and if you got there early you'd get a lounger and parasol to use. We didn't bother with the Hotel's beach section, we found secluded ones further up the bay but it did look nice, pebbly and busy though. Never got to try the sauna or jacuzzi as had to book a day in advance and we never knew what we were doing.
We were half board and food was very nice. Breakfast layout was amazing, plenty of fresh fruit always being brought out and their seeded bread was sensational. Dinner was changeable most nights, lots of different salads, hot and cold dishes. Plenty of cakes, icecream and fruit for dessert.
Generally a great time but we found the guests very unfriendly. I tried smiling everyday to people you recognise at meal times and 99% of the time I got a blank face staring back at me. Shame cos on the last day we met a friendly couple!
