I have never been let down by tripadvisor reviews...until I stay at the Hotel Kompas. Until reaching Dubrovnik, my husband and I had enjoyed a series of nice (if not slightly dated) hotels. We expected something more of the Kompas given the price we were paying ($150USD/night).
The conditions of the hotel are quite dated. We are not people who require luxury, but from the moment I entered the hotel I suffered horrible allergies and a headache from an overwhelming smell of what I can only describe as Mr. Bubbles bubble bath.
It was late May when we visited and the weather was on the warm side (after all, that's why we came). To our surprise when we turned on the AC, the heat came on. When I called down, I was told the AC wasn't on yet.
The fitness facility actually also serves as the local gym, so when you go to the indoor pool and fitness center, you walk through a membership desk and then past a number of older Croatian women impatiently waiting for their weight lifter sons. Not welcoming to other guests of the hotel.
On the plus side, the area IS nice, if not a little out of the way of downtown Dubrovnik. I can see how this hotel would be quite family friendly, and breakfast was decent. For couples looking to enjoy the magic and romance that Dubrovnik can truly offer, I recommend looking elsewhere. And if you have the cash to spare (or perhaps some extra frequent flier miles), splurge for the Hilton, it looked stunning.
