I have never been let down by tripadvisor reviews...until I stay at the Hotel Kompas. Until reaching Dubrovnik, my husband and I had enjoyed a series of nice (if not slightly dated) hotels. We expected something more of the Kompas given the price we were paying ($150USD/night).

The conditions of the hotel are quite dated. We are not people who require luxury, but from the moment I entered the hotel I suffered horrible allergies and a headache from an overwhelming smell of what I can only describe as Mr. Bubbles bubble bath.

It was late May when we visited and the weather was on the warm side (after all, that's why we came). To our surprise when we turned on the AC, the heat came on. When I called down, I was told the AC wasn't on yet.

The fitness facility actually also serves as the local gym, so when you go to the indoor pool and fitness center, you walk through a membership desk and then past a number of older Croatian women impatiently waiting for their weight lifter sons. Not welcoming to other guests of the hotel.

On the plus side, the area IS nice, if not a little out of the way of downtown Dubrovnik. I can see how this hotel would be quite family friendly, and breakfast was decent. For couples looking to enjoy the magic and romance that Dubrovnik can truly offer, I recommend looking elsewhere. And if you have the cash to spare (or perhaps some extra frequent flier miles), splurge for the Hilton, it looked stunning.

Clean. Comfortable. Had internet and parking, pool. Very good buffet breakfast. Restaurant had a good menu. Good location near the beach. As a young couple we felt that the style was a bit 'old school' and better targetted for the older crowd, but still enjoyed our stay.

“Good Food, Excellent Service”

We used our Air Miles on a special offer trip to Dubrovnik with a week at the Kompas. We did not know what to expect but were delighted with the quality of the room and the friendly service from the staff. The room was an acceptable size, well-decorated and spotlessly clean. Maid service was prompt and cheerful. Buffet dinners and breakfasts were hot and fresh with plenty of variety. The hotel is pleasantly situated with a good view of Lapad Bay from the front rooms which have good-sized south-facing balconies. Those at the back of the hotel which face north and look into a hillside and which have no balconies would be a lot less agreeable. The one problem which we saw was a possible difficulty of access for disabled guests. The front door of the hotel is three flights of stairs above the reception area, with no alternative lift.

My husband and I stayed in this hotel several times, but always in off-
season. So, I can’t tell you much about beach and summer-services. It looks as there could be very crowd, because there are two big hotels (Kompas and Park), several smaller (Adriatic, Vis, Komodor), many small private hotels and houses, and only one (not too big) beach…Hotel is rated 3* and I think it is OK. Rooms are small, furniture is average, balcony is big, view is excellent. Restaurant is big, and food is quite good. If you come by car, you could have problem with parking, because hotel’s one is very small. Old town IS NOT in walking distance, but that is not problem, as there is pretty good city bus service

The Kompas lost my booking, so we got off to a rocky start (bring a hard-copy with you). But from then on it was all plus-es. Its benign exterior and average interior belie a hidden jewel, especially for families, for right in front - between the hotel and the sea - is a treed park with a children's amusement ground set closest, with funfair music. All day the sounds of children at play form a musical background, and this can't be more appropriate to the holiday spirit, manifesting relaxation and happiness. Therefore, be forewarned - avoid this hotel if you are a misanthrope. The staff are courteous and approachable, and the whole ambience is one of an old-time easy-going sea-side resort, with a beautiful view across the small bay, and is somewhat secluded on the very edge of town. Having said that, there is little casualness when it comes to food. They make a big effort on meals, which are served buffet style, on-time, well-presented, wide choice. Bravo Kompas.
