I haven't stayed at other hotels in Dubai, frankly I won't ever stay at another. Flora Grand is an absolute keeper and I can't imagine staying anywhere else when I return to Dubai. Located 3-5 stops on the fantastically regular, clean and modern metro from Dubai airport, Flora Grand is literally a stones throw away from exit 2 of Al Rigga Metro station.
Location-wise, FG is situated in the middle of Deira; the older traditional part of Dubai. It is 3 stops to Al Ras station which is located by the souqs and some beautiful lanes in which to get lost. 4 stops to Al Ghubaiba and the Dubai Creek, the Dubai museum and a market. 4 stops to Al Jafilya for the beach and grand mosque, 7 to Chelsea Towers at the financial centre stop for the etihad express coach to Abu Dhabi and 8 to Burj Dubai and the Dubai Mall. I took only 1 cab to Jumeira public beach and it cost 38 Dirhams.
Around the hotel is a supermarket, a fast food chicken resturant, a couple of coffee shops and some smaller shops but nothing of note.
The staff, primarily Filipino and Indian, are extremely welcoming and friendly. I arrived 4 hours before check in, was sat down with a welcome drink and brought some tourist leaflets whilst they asked house keeping to do my room early. For the two days they were extremely helpful, knowledgeable about the area and only too willing to help.
The rooms are really nice. Along the same standard as a marriot. Only critique would be that I would like nicer toiletries and a better selection of English language tv channels. Wifi was quick, aircon powerful and free tea, coffee and water. A free English language paper is delivered every morning.
The pool on the rooftop is nice. It won't win any awards compared to other pools but it's got an ok sized area with lots of loungers and umbrellas which are free. The pool is an ok size, probably can't do any serious swimming in it though but it's just what you need to cool down. There is a lifeguard on duty and food and drink can be ordered to the poolside. Food is well priced and good. Pool towels are also free to use and they allowed me to take with me to the beach. The changing rooms are being renovated so I can't comment there. The gym was well equipped, your typical hotel gym.
I didn't eat in the restaurant but the food looked good. Guests get a discount. There is also a shop, cafe, hair salon and spa room. A tour trip booker is also based in reception.
In all, this is a fantastic hotel and is ridiculously cheap! My room was 250 Dirhams per night, but then Dubai hotel tax at 20% was added totalling 300 Dirhams per night (50GBP, 82USD).
