“Wonderful Stay at Vitosha”

Vitosha Guest Haus Inn

6 Apr 2008

In the case of the Vitosha Guest Haus, our stay was outstanding in so many ways that the negative reviews I read were hardly credible. If the inn's website appeals to you, make the reservation. We did and were delighted by the ambiance, personal care, attention to detail, uniqueness and charm of the property and thoughtfulness of the proprietor. I found the inn's website to be accurate in its representation of the property.

This is one of the best B&B's I have ever stayed in. The only two issues we had were minor. We did not even feel it was worth mentioning except to help others manage their expectations so that they may more fully enjoy their stay: the hot water was plentiful and sufficient once it got going, but required a little tweaking and patience; other than that, the foot traffic during certain times of day seemed a little noisy from inside our room, but did not detract from the pleasure of our stay.

It is so rare to experience a B&B that is both tasteful and romantic, with authentic old-world charm, in a great location, and at more than a reasonable rate for the value.

I felt transported to another time and place in a storybook from my childhood.

The Vitosha is a unique little piece of old-world European hospitality right in the heart of Ann Arbor. Don't be cheated out of a great experience by negative reviews you may read. We would stay again in a heartbeat. This is the kind of place that enhances the memory of a special occasion. I know it did for us.

“Loved Vitosha”

Vitosha Guest Haus Inn

We booked a room at Vitosha, and then a week later, saw reviews that were quite alarming. We decided to go ahead, and we are very glad that we did stay at Vitosha.
The rooms and service were amazing. Furnishings were authentic and understated from the thick quilts on the beds, working antique phone to the heated slate floors. We truly felt that we had stepped back in time to a Bavarian or German Guest House. Our bed was firm, but a check of other rooms found beds that were soft. Anyone should be able to find a room to their liking. We sleep at home around 62, Vitosha was quite a bit warmer. The rooms were not cluttered, but neat, and very relaxing.
The innkeeper was very polite, and genuinely interested in our comfort, offering to serve us any way she could. Her staff was wonderful.
The food could not have been better. All of it seemed home made, not from pre-packaged foodstuffs. All elegantly served in the dining room with fresh flowers, linens and fine china. We loved the coffee - it reminded me of Starbucks or other like coffee houses - rich and full bodied. This was by far the best B & B where we have stayed.

I am glad that we didn't let the bad reviews scare us off. Staying at Vitosha made our anniversary here one of our most relaxing!

“awful!”

Vitosha Guest Haus Inn

i wanted to write a review because i just read the one written by the girl who was treated terribly by the owner in aug. 2007. the exact same thing happened to my husband and i! we too were warned by the owner that the bathtub was not meant for "play time." i could not believe it. i am a 30 year old professional woman: the nerve! my friends had purchased a gift certificate for my husband and i to celebrate our one year anniversary in the wedding suite. we were told the day we arrived that the room was not available because there was some issue with the fireplace. so we accepted this and made due. we were given a FREEZING room. the next morming, i was checking out and i overheard the person ahead of me checking out. it turns out that he was given OUR wedding suite and that the owner had lied to us! when i confronted her cordially, she freaked out on me and screamed at my husband and i that our expectations were unrealistic. i also received no apology. it seems like this kind of behavior is routine at this place. really, if you are staying in a b&b, you want to be treated like a guest, with a modicum of politeness at the very least. i would suggest staying somewhere else. especially if you look under 50: the owner will not trust you with her precious bathtub!

“atrocious "customer service" from owner/manager”

I'd attended art receptions and modern dance performances at the Guest Haus, and what I was able to see of the property during those times left me impressed; the grounds and furnishings are lovely, and I always wanted to return there for a stay. No longer!

About a month ago, my parents booked a room for my boyfriend and I, to celebrate my 32nd birthday and make his last visit to Ann Arbor (long distance relationship - we're both relocating out West in a few weeks) extra-special. The owner's reluctance to rent a room with a bathtub to "young couples... because [Vitosha has] had problems with all the splashing," despite my parents' repeated assertion we were adults, was slightly off-putting, but we happily received a letter confirming our reservation a couple days later.

Last week, two days before our "confirmed" stay, the owner contacted my parents to say the room was no longer available, as its tenants had elected to stay an extra day. She never apologized for the inconvenience, but offered to relocate us "kids" to smaller rooms with inferior views (one in an upstairs corner which they normally kept closed and only used as their "overflow" room); one had two twin beds and the other lacked a private bathroom. She offered no discounts for our inconvenience, and when my mother said her offer wasn't good enough, the owner snapped, "Well, what do you want, blood?," and hung up. She refused to pick up or return subsequent calls.

The following day, my parents were notified by e-mail that their reservation had been refunded, and that, "ironically, [Vitosha staff] had overlooked the sister room [to the China Room], which was available." Again, no apology.

Absolutely egregious - I can no longer suggest this place to anyone, and discourage everyone from even attending events there. They don't deserve your support.
