My experience with the Harbor Inn was terrific from the first phone call to check out. The woman who took my reservation was professional, courteous, and understandable. When I checked in the owner was welcoming and attentive. The price was reasonable and worth every penny.
My room was spotless and well cared for, with crisp linens on a very comfortable bed and a desk and chair for my laptop. They have a SECURE wireless connection. The refrigerator and coffee pot were neat and clean. The covered porch had comfortable deck furniture, a coke machine and a grill available to guests. There was parking right outside my door.
The pool and hot tub were sparkling clean and there were many tables and chairs for relaxing around the pool.
The continental breakfast was very good, with bagels, english muffins, raisin toast, granola bars, coffee, and fruit. The juice, butter and cream cheese were kept fresh and cold in a refrigerator next to the counter.
The customer service was excellent. They answered all of my questions, gave me great information on area attractions and even made telephone inquiries for me. They gave me directions to the casino and a fun Irish Pub. All the while maintaining a comfortable, homey atmosphere. Even the cat welcomed me.
The location was terrific, close to restaurants, shops, two golf courses and parks, as well as a harbor with a dog run for my puppy. Yes they accept pets too!
Housekeeping was unobtrusive and kept my room very nice for the three days I stayed. Everyone I had contact with was friendly, polite and helpful.
This is my hotel of choice for any stay within 50 plus miles of Au Gres.

  • Liked — The friendly, courteous service
  • Disliked — My stay was too short.

After reading the past reviews I feel obligated to stick up for this American family owned and operated hotel. Keep in mind your in Au Gres Michigan... Where? Exactly. The biggest event(s) held in the city is a fishing tournament and the local High school football games. Being a past small business owner I realize the hard ships this family is going through. I spent some time talking and getting to know the owners and I was very impressed on their intelligence and 'go-get-em' attitude. Au Gres is a town going under because of snooty high-maintenance people (see past two reviewers). This is not the Hilton. This is a privately owned and operated hotel and from my experience it had the best service than any star rated hotel.
It takes understanding and respect. This couple has a lot on their plates (and have to share some of that with their 5 sons). It's a hard business and I have lots of respect for them and wish them the best of luck. I had absolutely no problem paying the price they asked because I know they only had those prices so they could feed themselves after the bills came in.

  • Liked — Service and the family friendly atmosphere
  • Disliked — The fact that such a nice couple is having such a hard time trying to keep every guest happy

After reading some of the reviews I was skeptical but there was no smell, the lobby was clean the pool was clear and the owners were wonderful. I would stay here again and again.

With the other somewhat positive reviews (besdies the most recent one), I was willing to give this place a chance, especially since it was the only place that had any vacancies close to the golf courses we were planning to visit. What a big mistake. My impressions went from bad to worse. The lobby was a mess. Dirty towels loaded up in hampers - looked like family laundry. Mail, bills, etc. all over a table. Carpet was dirty. In general, a real mess. And a cat meowed at us non-stop. Got the keys to the room. Access to the rooms are by an interior corridor. That corridor was my next red flag, dirty carpet, dirty walls, a wall hung trash bin with more dirty towels on the floor, not to mention the smell. Opened the room and was hit with a musty basement type smell. We immediately opened the windows - but it was a small window, and not much air could circulate. I was just thankful for some air, and there was a window in the bathroom that helped bring in fresh air. The other window was a big window that looked out into the dirty corridor, and people walking by could be heard and seen. We shut that, and closed those blinds right away too. As far as the room, the carpet was old and dirty, the bathroom was very outdated (the floor of the shower was springy and had rusty cracks that were taped with non-slip decals - I thought one of us would go through the floor), and there was a refrigerator jammed into a corner, as if it was an end table to one of the two beds. We had no time to switch rooms or find another place to stay at this point. We were travelling to play golf, didn't plan on being in the room more than 10 hours, so we left for golf until later that night. The towels were clean, and the sheets looked crisp and clean. Thankfully. By night time, the smell had disappated, and at that point, we just wanted to sleep, get up, and check out. Our boys had hoped to swim, but one look at the pool and they said forget it! The pool area, although large and could be attractive, was messy and the pool water was very cloudy. It was time to just get some rest. Falling to sleep was another matter though, with the banging of other rooms' doors, etc., the sound proofing was minimal, if anything. In the morning, I looked for the continental breakfast as my husband and son had an early tee time. All that was offered were English muffins, half a loaf of raisen bread, and coffee. No juice. No butter, but I found margerine tub in the refrigerator there. Needless to say, the golfers had breakfast at the course and the rest of us went out to eat. Do not plan on a breakfast, if you must stay here. We paid the same amount as the previous poster, $97, as outrageous rate for a extremely subpar motel room.

Run far away from this hotel. The property is in bad shape and everything about this place was dirty. We paid $97.20 for 2 beds for one night only to have holes in the walls, a hole in the matress, stains on the carpet in our room as well throughout the halls and stains on the upholstered chair in our room. Many extension cords were hap hazardly strewn across several areas and there seemed to be a problem with their electrical system since when you flushed the toilet the lights dimmed. The pool was very cloudy and the pool area was dirty. A door was hanging by it's hinges to what was called an exercise room. That could cause harm to small children around that area. We informed the proprietor of our dis-satisfaction right away and she asked what we thought the room was worth. We stated $50.00 at max and she said she could not help us. (Even a $10.00 discount would have meant something). We looked for another hotel in the area, but were forced to stay the night at this hotel because everything else was booked and it was pouring rain.
