When we asked our teenagers (aged 19) where they would like to go for holiday (having already ascertained that they wanted to come with us) they both immediately said Austria and the Hotel Peter in St Wolfgang, Room 502 on the top floor. You will see from the previous reviews that we visited this hotel last year and our return proved to be just as good, if not better, Plenty of relaxation with activities galore in the region if you wish - a perfect combination (bearing in mind we had generally very good weather).
If you are a family and have children/teenagers who don't mind sharing then Room 205 is really good value for money. 2 bedrooms, a separate bathroom and loo, a lliving room with a sofa bed if needed and a smallish balcony with lake and mountain views, with decent sun during late morning into early evening.
Wonderful breakfasts give a good sgtart to the day. Evening meals are very pleasant and we ate at the restaurant two or three times. The view from the terrace on a good evening is just wonderful and poeple walking past are obviously envious if you have one of the good tables.
The Elsner family and their staff are really good and made us feel welcome on our return. They work round you and do everything they can to make your stay a good one.
St Wolgang remains a lovely holiday destination with plenty to do around the lake and lots of shortish excursions tp other local attractions.
A day in Salzburg is easily within reach and not to be missed.
The lakeside town of Hallstadt is different from other Austrian towns and well worth a visit, as is the lake at Gosausee, with the view up to the Dachstein glacier.
A little further away are the salt mines at Hallein (along with the longest summer toboggan run in Austria nearby - a must for teenagers and parents who are young at heart). Easily reached within an hour of St W.
All in all we had another good stay at The Hotel Peter and would definitely recommend it to friends and family. If you want a lakeside 'lido' then you will have to pay a bit (or a lot) more for one of the hotels more lakeside or with their own bathing area, but there are several areas/lidos that you can access for a small charge or for free.

My wife and I have recently returned from an 11 night stay at the Peter in St Wolfgang. This was booked through UK travel company Thomson and we took half board.
Our only real disappointment was the weather which was often wet. The week before was better (isn’t it always!) and our earlier experiences in this lake area have had better weather.
When we arrived at the hotel we were met by Frau Elsner who, with her husband, own the hotel. She was very friendly and with her husband always seemed to be around and about, chatting to guests.
The hotel overlooks the lake and is situated on the main road as in comes into the village. Noise is not an issue as traffic is diverted around St Wolfgang via a tunnel. There is however very little beyond the village so not a great deal of traffic anyway.
Our room overlooked the lake and because of the high position of the hotel the views are excellent. We had a balcony with our own lake view and a proper sitting area. The room was clean and comfortable and well fitted. We spent more time than we would have liked in the room as I twisted my back moving our cases and so reading was a primary occupation for several days. Throughout this time we were very comfortable watching the comings and goings on the lake.
The dining room also overlooked the lake and guests on half board seemed to be the ones allocated the tables next to the windows, so meals were taken with superb panoramic views. Breakfast was good but, naturally, “European” ie cold meat and cheese, and sometimes croissants. Also the owner made her own secret recipe chocolate cake, which for me, went down really well (ok, well I think cold meat is odd for breakfast!).
Dinner is served rather early at 5.30 to 7.30 although there was no problem arriving at the end of the session. The half board menu consists of four courses but be warned that the salad buffet listed in the Thomson brochure doesn’t exist and according to the staff hasn’t done so for a few years. The quality was very good but rather lacking in vegetables to my taste although I accept that is a British preference. There was a choice of main course. We rather missed the salad bar I guess because of the shortage of veg.
Most guests at the hotel were not British which suited us to be in the minority.
The staff were excellent and the room had a guide to who was who and giving names against a photograph. Nice touch because I find it more enjoyable to talk to someone using their name. The ladies in the dining room were very pleasant and usually wore national dress. Each had their own ability to predict the weather (invariably wrongly).
The hotel doesn’t have a garden or access to the lake for swimming (latter not an issue with us). It has pleasant outside terraces where we invariably returned several times a day for beer or coffee (and a friendly welcome).
It also has Maurice the Weather Cat. The hotel cat was the only one who could accurately predict the weather. If he was in the small guests’ lounge area on one of the settees it was going to rain. If he was wet, it was already raining. Amazing!
Would we return? No issues with the hotel at all but we found the village a little restricted. We decided we preferred St Wolfgang to St Gilgen where we have stayed in previous years. The downside is that you travel by bus or coach all the way round the lake before you access the route to Salzburg and beyond. This we felt made travelling wider afield tedious. For coach travel you would inevitably be first on first off. But the hotel, definitely 9/10

“Great Hotel”

Hotel Peter

6 Jul 2008

We stayed in Hotel Peter for 7 nights in May and found it an excellent choice. We were given a room at the third floor (#306). The room was large in size and came with a balcony, with expansive lake/mountain views (we were told that all rooms have good views). In addition to the double bed, we also had a couch in the room, which was useful after a long and tiring day. The bathroom was spacious and equipped with a shower and a bath. The toilet is separate. Everything was very clean.

Breakfast was very good, with a wide variety of choices, including cold meat, bread rolls, crossants, eggs, fruit, cheese, etc. The hotel has its own restaurant and the food was good.

Hotel staff were friendly and the lady who looked after us (I believe she is the owner of the hotel) was very nice, exhuberantly greeting us every morning at breakfast. When we decided to leave one day early (to see more of Vienna) she was very generous about this too, not charging us for the extra night.

St Wolfgang is a small village and the hotel is close to all amenities, including two supermarkets, ferry, bus stop etc.

My wife and I stayed at the Hotel Peter on half board for a fortnight in September 2006. We enjoyed splendid weather, and a hotel to match. Our spacious room was delightful – and thoughtfully fitted out with helpful extras. The balcony offered wonderful vistas across the lake to the mountains. Breakfast provided a rich selection of bread, rolls, cereal, fruit and cold meats – and even scrambled eggs if we wished. The evening meal was varied, attractive and well-cooked; our only reservation being that, with elderly appetites, we could not always do justice to the four courses. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, who went out of their was to assist when we had particular requests. Perhaps, though, our most striking commendation is in terms I cannot recall ever before using of a hotel. This is clearly a happy place, where the friendly staff and proprietors are obviously happy in their work, and do all that they can to ensure that guests are equally happy during their stay.

Just have to agree with the last review!
We stayed at Hotel Peter as part of a package deal this July. We looked at several hotels before choosing Hotel Peter and are we glad we did!
Frau Elser showed us to our room on arrival. She was obviously proud to show it to us - and justifiably so! The room was lovely, the en-suite bathroom splendid and the view amazing!
During our stay she or Herr Elser came to check we were OK every evening at dinner and made us feel really welcome. Frau Elser dressed in beautiful Austrian style dresses at all times - a different one each day and often two different ones a day!
The hotel is well placed at one end of the little town - just a short walk to the lake and a little further into town. The lake ferry landing-stage is nearby and there is a pretty promenade further on.
Altogether a wonderful, relaxing and most enjoyable holiday.
