We had one of the only two suites. What luxury! Superbly designed rooms masses of space with every possible facility and the very best bathroom I think we have ever had anywhere - both in terms of spaciousness and sheer quality of design and practicality. The bathroom to die for!
This is a great value hotel with virtually no downside. The breakfasts are merely very good being served as against a buffet and the restaurant is also just very good rather than stunning (the Hotel de La Paix - more later).
The pool is small but ample and very pretty and is popular in the afternoons with guests. Quite a good place to socialise.
Our suite looked across and over the pool area towards the spa. It had a nice terrace to sit out on and dodge the gekkos.
The spa was excellent and I had a couple of exceptional massages which were very relaxing. The whole massage experience was the best I have ever had in SE Asia. One great idea here, is that the Front Desk stocks a batch of high speed laptops that you can hire cheaply and take to your room where there is excellent wi fi coverage. This is a practice other hotels should follow.

The FCC is a strange place. A wonderful piece of marketing that is very effective as the company spreads its wings with branches elsewhere (the original one was in Phnom Penh). Actually only a new company with really few connections to Foreign Correspondents where it takes its name. Only the colonial style of building they seem to like reflects the name. The second PP FCC will open soon and will be in a wonderfully grand old building just along from the original. It complements the very boutique Quay Hotel also in PP which is sheer state of the art minimal to compare with any boutique hotel anywhere in the World. All in all a chain of hotels that is very exciting to patronise as it offers uniqueness and high standards in every instance. Sorry if this seems like an advert but we are VERY impressed with their modus operendi. Wish I could buy shares.
Back to Siem Reap and the FCC.
It's position on the river is great and it does retain that colonial feel. Wonder what impact the impending extension will have on the overall atmosphere of the place?
Now let me mention the Hotel de la Paix just down the road which we visited twice to eat. The restaurant there is magnificent of Michelin 3-star Standard. Stunning food, exciting innovative menu and wonderful service. Great wine list. Not expensive for the quality of food and wine on offer. You cannot not eat there. If you are to have only one splurge meal make it the De La Paix. Also note they have a wonderful coffee shop/bakery which turns out the best bread and croissant I have ever eaten in Asia. The hotel itself is stunning and innovative. Though it is quite a bit more expensive than the FCC it gives it a real run for its money. Either hotel would satisfy the most critical of hotel connoseurs.
Siem Reap is an amazing place. Everywhere - especially on the outskirts - are huge hotels mainly the bigger chains. Town is lively clean and attractive. Very touristy no doubt but still a very attractive place to hang out before and after visiting the stunning Angkors.

The rooms are unique from the entrance door, to the way they are named and the bathtub/shower that has water that comes through a stone passageway through the wall. Tastefully and simply decorated. The television was super tiny, if that's of any concern to you as a traveler, not us, we were just surprised, given the price tag. The grounds are nice, the back entrance where you check in is probably not the greatest representation of the hotel. Street side near their restaurant is the picture featured on their website. The view across the way is a murky moat or river, never actually did find out. The one complaint I'd have about the room is that there is no privacy at all in the bathroom. It is a large/long louvered sliding door, so if you're a new couple, this could be problematic for some I'm sure. My friend and I would simply sit out on the little alcove outside of our room while the other had to utilize the restroom. They have safes and their spa is very nice, a little pricey for the area, but not horrible and I'd definitely recommend it. Great ambience. The pool is nicely done as well, and it's not too resorty a feel, it's very quaint, and relaxing. I actually really liked the design of the pool. There are a ton of great hotels in the area that are less expensive, but some are just not as well located. The FCC has an ideal location, just off the main strip about 3 blocks removed, so you don't have the city noise, but it's a very easy walk. You have Koulen down the street if you want to take in a very touristy show that offers both traditional Thai dancing and Cambodian dancing. The buffet there is decent enough, not fabulous, but good. You're a short walk from the Night Market as well. One recommendation, be sure to bring your insect repellant, many mosquitoes in this vicinity. The FCC makes it easy to access the city and a market is super close to purchase bottled water and snacks for next to nothing and a carton of Ara cigarettes go for $5.20, yes a carton. Not that I'm a smoker, but if you are, I was just floored. Isn't that the price of a pack? It is also an easy location to see the Angkor area...be sure to see Ta Prohm and Angkor Thom, I found both far more impressive than Angkor Wat. Yes you read correctly.

“good choice in Siem Reap”

FCC Angkor

22 May 2008

Nice location a brisk walk into centre or a $1,50 tuktuk ride. Quiet and leafy just behind the royal residence. The gorunds are very nice and surprisingly mosquito-free we found.

The pool is small but looks lovely and certainly a welcome break from the heat.

The breakfast/restaurant area is very nice though in the evening it tends to get overrun with groups coming from other hotels.

The rooms are large and nicely kitted-out. The full floor-to-ceiling door-windows onto the landing make it so that you need to have your curtains drawn most of the time when you're in the room but not really a major issue.

Would have no problems staying here again. From a few drives around Siem Reap (though never on other side of the river) I would not chose to stay in the centre but would again pick the FCC/Victoria/Raffles area. Much more pleasant.

“Great boutique hotel! An oasis of peace in Angkor”

FCC Angkor

We debated between the FCC and Hotel de la Paix and definitely made the right choice. We chose a pool side room which was well worth the extra, especially during the hot season just to be able to step out of the room a jump straight into the pool. The pool itself was lovely and not at all crowded when we were there (though might be small in peak season if all the hotel occupants chose to use it at the same time). TIP: try to specify a pool room far away from the reception otherwise you have guests walking past yr room all day - best/most private rooms were Tumeric & Tamarind right at the very end, and very close to the spa!. Our 6 good reasons to choose the FCC at Siem Reap:
1. Spa - best facial I've ever had (and good value during the day with 30% discount)
2. Breakfast - large, very tasty, and good choice - and served between 4.30am to 10.30am which gives you the flexibility to eat before or after the dawn run to Angkor. There's also tea making facility in the room if you can't face a huge breakfast at 4.30am, with a cafetiere & real ground coffee!! A major plus for Nescafe-loathers like me.
3. Location - by the river, walking distance to Abacus restaurant (great French food) and only $1 moto ride to Pub Street if you have to go!
4. Bar - great cocktails & lovely garden to sit out esp during half price happy hour 5-7pm.
5. Very friendly staff/rapid service - their airport pick up service was 5 star - well worth the $10 charge.
6. Small size - just right size - small enough to give personalised service and too small to attract the Angkor coach-tours.
The only negative about the FCC is the high cost of the internet -$3 for 30 mins - exhorbitant but there is a good internet cafe across the river charging only $0.50 for an hour. There is however free WiFi for those with laptops, or you can rent a laptop, tho' again expensive.

RE VISA - definitely recommend getting the evisa. Well worth the extra $5 not to queue for at least 1 hour at visa on arrival at Siem Reap airport. Took only 2 days to process.

“Great Hotel - excellent stay”

On our recent trip to Siem Reap, we had the pleasure of staying at FCC. We had a pool side room (rumbutan) and it lived up to the expectation set on the Hotels web site (one of my hates is the crap they put in about rooms, on websites).
The pool was excellent as was the bar out front (many mojitos during happy hour 5-7pm). Back to the room.....funky and comfortable, although the PC screen that is the TV was a little small, the sound system was good as was the aircon and ceiling fan. I dont know whay more places dont have this combo?? We found that once the room cooled the fan was enough to keep us comfortable at night. Shower was great but as has been mentioned make sure the sliding door is close if you use the toilet!! We also did 2 sunrise trips to the temples and ordered breakfast for 4:30 on those mornings, and bugger me it turned up at ....4:30..excellent service....We hired a tuk-tuk from the hotel and we ended up booking the same guy for the 3 days, he was great. his name is Boy. He cost $15 US per day and $5 extra if you want to do a sunrise. We found that the best apprach was to do a sunrise, then another temple, back to the hotel around 11am, swim, nap, lunch, swim, them back to temples around 3pm for sunset. If these was something that did irk me, was at checkout we were charged for water taken out of the mini bar. We know we did not take the water, but didnt want to hassle over a few bucks....but its the principal damn it!. I addressed this in an email to the hotel, but thought i should mention it. The side road the hotel carpark in on is currently under construction, so it is quite dusty, but this didnt really cause any problems. If you decide to walk to the food areas we found that best way was to go via the road that runs beside the river, and walk on the river side. We ate at a couple of the local Khmer restaurants (there are heaps of them) and found that food to be excellent.
