We have just returned from a two week trip in Cambodia and this hotel was definitely the highlight in terms of our accomodation! We chose to stay in one of their suites which has to be one of the best rooms we've stayed in, definitely in Asia. We loved all of the small touches, the huge bathroom and seating area.

The staff are very helpful and friendly and were great at organising our onward trip to Phnom Penh on the Mekong Bus. At reception we were able to change larger denominations of dollars no problem which was really useful. My one niggle would be the cleaners who didn't always do a thorough job in replacing towels and our shower overflowed on its first use as the plug was completely blocked with hair. They are also very noisy from about 6am as their cleaning cupboard containing all their equipment is located directly next to this suite - "Palm Sugar". We did tell the management about this and they did seem to make a bit of an effort to be a little quieter! There is a little building work going on next door at the moment but it didn't really disturb us too much even when we were sitting at the pool. It is not going on all day.

We loved the location directly opposite the river and loved taking long breakfasts watching the world go by from the balcony area. The breakfasts are HUGE- I ended up asking for smaller portions! Really very good food which keeps you going for your long days touring the temples. We didn't eat dinner here as we favoured venturing out but I'm sure the food is good although a little pricey for Cambodia

We decided to mainly take a tuk tuk into the centre of town for dinner and drinks which should cost you 2USD. We used a tuk tuk driver who sits outside the FCC for the entire stay to take us around the temples and into town when he was free. His name is Bayon and he was wonderful - always on time and knowledgeable about which temples to go to when to avoid the crowds.

We had a fantastic stay in Siem Reap and would highly recommend this to anyone seeking a smaller scale hotel.

This is the BEST hotel I've ever stayed in! Even better than the Four Seasons in terms of value and service - this coming from a road warrior who stays in hotels more than 100 days/year. The service staff are personally attentive, and far from intrusive. Here's a copy of my thank you note to them.

"Dear Soriya and FCC team,

I have arrived home safely in Singapore and already miss the FCC breakfast this morning!

I wanted to thank you for making my holiday so fantastic and memorable. It was so good to wake up every morning and see your smiling faces, and to know that everything had been taken care of. I learnt a lot about Cambodia: the history and the people and I look forward to coming back again."

We stayed at the FCC while we did a superb 3 day tour of the temples with the excellent guide Jon Teng and his brilliant driver Nhang. We booked the hotel through expedia and got a great rate that inlcuded breakfast. The hotel is situated just out of the town centre - about a 15 min pleasant walk along the river or a 2 min tuk tuk ride (2$'s) The room was excellent - large, clean and nicely decorated. The shower was good (big overheadshower) but it did tend to soak the floor. Each of the rooms have their own patio area and the rooms are turned down each night so you return to find the room scented with lovely oils and an orchid on your pillow. The pool area was great and didn't seem to be overly used - we had it to ourselves most of the time and was a nice way to relax after touring the temples. The breakfast was excellent value and gave you plenty of energy for hiking around the temples it was also served quickly and if you wish will be served to your room for no extra charge. It was great to eat breakfast and watch the early morning traffic past by. Siem reap is a great place and the temples are better than you will ever imagine, they really are magnificant. However, SR is changing fast - there are more hotels being built on the outskirts of town than I could count - so mark my words, this place is in line for a big face lift over the next few years. Whether this is good or bad remains to be seen. The centre of SR was good although was getting a little touristy - the market is a great place to buy the angkor trinkets and the restaurants along pub street serve great food and are great value. But back to the the FCC - we didn't eat in the restuarant on an evening as we prefer to eat in the local restuarants, but it seemed pricey. We were given a complimentary foot massage in their lovely spa - this was an excellent extra that I wasn't expecting. The staff were very friendly and helped with our onward travel. Overall I can highly recommend this hotel.

“UNLESS YOU WANT YOUR BELONGINGS STOLEN - STAY AWAY!”

FCC Angkor

I would be very wary of staying at the hotel, my mother was robbed while she stayed there by the hotel staff. I have outlined her experience below to demonstrate what a nightmare it turned out to be and also so you realise that this is a genuine review and lastly how terrible the response of FCC and the staff has been. My brother and I sent our mother out to stay at the hotel whilst she was visiting my brother in Singapore as we thought it was a high end establishment with a nice spa close to ankor wat which would suit her. Moreover, as a female in her late fifties travelling alone, we did not want her to stay anywhere she did not feel safe. On her first full day at the hotel she booked a massage in the hotel spa. Upon arriving for the massage she was shown to the changing rooms by a lady and told to lock her belongings in a locker before going for a massage. My mother locked all of her belongings away in the locker and then went across for her massage in the robe and slippers provided. The lady escorted her into a treatment room, shut the door, took her robe and then gave my mother her massage. Upon arrriving back at the changing room, my mother realised that her watch had been stolen. She immediately asked the hotel staff as the watch was a three thousand pound cartier which she had bought for herself as a birthday present. This was the start of my mother's nightmare which went on for three days. As it was in the afternoon it took some time for the hotel manager to come down, he agreed the key must have been taken from her robe by the masseur or one of the girls who came into the room. My mother asked for the police to be called. The hotel manager refused to call the police asking for time to interview the staff, my mother had little choice but to accept. Fortunately, my brother is a partner at a London city law firm who is working out of Singapore and he told my mother that the insurance firm would require a police report to be filed immediated. Again my mother asked the manager for the police, again he refused. The next day the manager asked to my mother to watch him interview the staff. Of course no one was going to own up to the crime and this went on all morning to no avail. In addition, the manager asked the spa manager "whether the locks had been changed on the lockers" as he had requested - apparently this has happened before. My mother asked him why he could not fire the girls working in the spa and the response came back, "it would be very awkward as my wife works there". Finally, that afternoon the police turned up, who then had to send some tourist police to take the report (end of day 2). Day 3 and the tourist police turned up and were very aggressive and rude accusing my mother of making the story up, refusing to give her a copy of the police report with the hotel being reluctantly supportive. I won't go into more detail but the saga went on. Upon arriving back home, my brother (the solicitor) contacted the headquarters of FCC in Hong Kong requesting a refund for the watch. After several weeks of asking for a response the most obnoxious letter was emailed to us which said my mother made it up (i.e. her whole holiday was spent lying to them instead of visting Ankor Wat). I have been to Siem Reap before and am pleased to say Ankor Wat is amazing and there are plently of nice hotels to stay in where you do not have to go through this nightmare! Stay away, it is not worth it.

We had one of the only two suites. What luxury! Superbly designed rooms masses of space with every possible facility and the very best bathroom I think we have ever had anywhere - both in terms of spaciousness and sheer quality of design and practicality. The bathroom to die for!
This is a great value hotel with virtually no downside. The breakfasts are merely very good being served as against a buffet and the restaurant is also just very good rather than stunning (the Hotel de La Paix - more later).
The pool is small but ample and very pretty and is popular in the afternoons with guests. Quite a good place to socialise.
Our suite looked across and over the pool area towards the spa. It had a nice terrace to sit out on and dodge the gekkos.
The spa was excellent and I had a couple of exceptional massages which were very relaxing. The whole massage experience was the best I have ever had in SE Asia. One great idea here, is that the Front Desk stocks a batch of high speed laptops that you can hire cheaply and take to your room where there is excellent wi fi coverage. This is a practice other hotels should follow.

The FCC is a strange place. A wonderful piece of marketing that is very effective as the company spreads its wings with branches elsewhere (the original one was in Phnom Penh). Actually only a new company with really few connections to Foreign Correspondents where it takes its name. Only the colonial style of building they seem to like reflects the name. The second PP FCC will open soon and will be in a wonderfully grand old building just along from the original. It complements the very boutique Quay Hotel also in PP which is sheer state of the art minimal to compare with any boutique hotel anywhere in the World. All in all a chain of hotels that is very exciting to patronise as it offers uniqueness and high standards in every instance. Sorry if this seems like an advert but we are VERY impressed with their modus operendi. Wish I could buy shares.
Back to Siem Reap and the FCC.
It's position on the river is great and it does retain that colonial feel. Wonder what impact the impending extension will have on the overall atmosphere of the place?
Now let me mention the Hotel de la Paix just down the road which we visited twice to eat. The restaurant there is magnificent of Michelin 3-star Standard. Stunning food, exciting innovative menu and wonderful service. Great wine list. Not expensive for the quality of food and wine on offer. You cannot not eat there. If you are to have only one splurge meal make it the De La Paix. Also note they have a wonderful coffee shop/bakery which turns out the best bread and croissant I have ever eaten in Asia. The hotel itself is stunning and innovative. Though it is quite a bit more expensive than the FCC it gives it a real run for its money. Either hotel would satisfy the most critical of hotel connoseurs.
Siem Reap is an amazing place. Everywhere - especially on the outskirts - are huge hotels mainly the bigger chains. Town is lively clean and attractive. Very touristy no doubt but still a very attractive place to hang out before and after visiting the stunning Angkors.
