In Siem Reap for a few days this is a perfect base. Very reasonably priced 3* hotel by UK standards. Clean good sized rooms, hotel 10 minute walk into town centre for bars and restaurants. Buffet breakfast a bit hit and miss with things missing if you're late eating...and compared to the freshly cooked great food everywhere else in any restaurant a bit disappointing. Nice pool if you're not sightseeing. With Angkor on your doorstep you're not going to spend time indoors so for what you need in this town why pay more anywhere else when this is very good . Bit pricey for backpackers maybe....but check the backpackers places personally as they vary a lot.

The generally friendly, helpful and English-speaking staff is the best thing of this hotel. Otherwise, Angkor Star provides basic amenities: good air-con (a must in Cambodia), comfortable-enough beds, towels and basic toiletries, although they give you very little
toilet paper: we ran out of it by the morning, and we were only there after 10 pm each night...But they will give you more upon request. There is also a safety box in our room, although it’s stuck three out of ten times… but if you keep trying, it will open.

However, if you are obsessed with cleanness, this is not the place for you. My friends and I found several stains on our bed sheets, pillow cases and towels. And they might not have changed our sheets during the three nights we stayed there, as we found same stains on them over all three nights… There are also stains in the toilet and the bath tub, and the water from the shower and the faucet tastes like rust… There are spider webs filled with dead mosquitoes on our ceiling…

Breakfast was ok… the omelet bar was a nice touch, but the orange juice was disgusting. We only had breakfast there once. The café in Hotel de la Paix, only 5-10 mins walk away is a great place for breakfast with most items less than USD 5. If you are driving or hiring a car, the breakfast prix fix at Amansara is great but a little pricy: USD 30 per head.

“The Better 3 star Hotel”

Angkor Star Hotel

Location is great as the hotel is along a main road where shopping, massage parlors, restaurants and mini marts are all walking distances. It is likewise around 15 mins distance to the temples so you can always go back to this hotel and refresh for half an hour during your day tours (which i recommend specially during the hot season).

This is a good hotel to stay if you plan your Siem Reap Trip to be more of visiting temples rather than enjoying hotel amenities.

The rooms are nice. And surprisingly big.

For the US$35 rate (i visited during an off season) i got, i expected a small room with a double bed. no furnitures. limited amenities. No mini fridge. No lampshades, No bathtub. no interior designs. And just a room with one bright light in the middle of the room.

I got the opposite of all these and is very happy with my room. With the rate vs. the room i got, i am glad i selected this hotel.

I also got a room on the side of the main road and yes, you can't hear any outside noise from the tuktuks.

By the way, they don't refill their breakfast table automatically. You have to ask for refills in case you eat breakfast late.

And there's free wifi at the lobby which i can still get the signal at the balcony of my 2nd floor room ...

First of all, their rooms are advertised at $100 on their website and in their reception. If you call in on foot they will give you a rate of $60 BUT if you book on the internet (WOTIF.com) then you can get the deluxe rooms (inc breakfast and airport pick-up) for $26-$28....and it is barely worth that!

Good points
- Friendly staff...most of the time
- Fairly good location - 10 min walk to restaurants etc
- Comfortable rooms

Bad points;
- There are 5 floors to the hotel...the lift only goes to the 4th floor?!!
- Our 'Deluxe' room had a broken patio door that would not close let alone lock. A member of staff eventually managed to 'jimmy the lock' enough so it would lock but there was still a big gap for all sorts of creatures and their friends to wander in.
- There was no shower curtain, although there was a rail and hooks for one!?! They did manage to find one when we asked
- The main light in the bathroom was blown and not replaced so was very dark
- Laundry & mini-bar are ridiculously expensive e.g a medium sized (4 days worth) load of laundry was going to cost us $38 and a small 0.5 litre bottle of water costs $1.50 - a 1.5 litre bottle in the shop costs $0.50
- At multiple times of the day (particularly early evening) a terrible sewerage smell invades the hotel and lingers in the rooms
- After ordering room service it took the staff 3 telephone calls over 12 hours and a visit to reception before they collected the plates...they did this 3 times!!!
- A metal light fixture outside the bathroom fell on my girlfriend’s head as she closed the bathroom door. When reception was informed they merely laughed.
- Breakfast is poor - limited choice, few seats and not great quality. We only had it once and ate out the rest of our stay
- The shower drainage was very bad; within one minute water was up to ankle level.
- The hotel advertised that there is internet in the rooms - THERE ISN'T! There is wireless in the reception only.
- Reception constantly stinks of cigarette smoke
- There were multiple power cuts every day of our stay.
- The rooms themselves are not particularly clean - stained bed sheets and towels, dust and dirt around edges of the room etc

To top it off, towards the end of our stay we checked their website and brochure again and noticed that our room looked remarkably like a superior and not a deluxe as we had booked and paid for. When we queried this with reception they tried to fob us off that 'all the rooms on the 5th floor are deluxe - just different style'. We wrote an email to WOTIF (website we booked with) to complain and they promptly replied that the hotel had admitted it was a superior room and was refunding the difference!!!

Overall, even at $26 per night there were just too many problems to make it worthwhile and we would not recommend this hotel or return.

I booked the hotel via internet at a very good price much lower than the walk-in rate USD80. The rooms are clean and air-con. Though it's beside busy road, you don't hear the traffic noise once inside the room. The counter ladies/men are polite and speak average English. The breakfast buffet is USD3 which is OK. The location is great: there are mini marts within 1 min walking distance, a restaurant across the road which u can watch Aspara dance, new market and old market are 7 and 20 mins walking distance respectively.
Don't be shy to ask for free room upgrade, you may get it during low season.
