I strongly recommend not staying at this hotel. This is not due to a strange our unlucky experience, but an established practice of the hotel defended by the managers I spoke with.
After breakfast following our first night at the hotel, I returned to my room to find 3 well-dressed employees of the hotel going through my partners wallet. They had its contents poured out on the bed - two were counting out the money and inspecting each pocket while a third was taking notes on a notepad.
When entering, the three men immediately stood back, and spoke very little English (and thus unable to answer the questions I immediately put to them, namely, "What the hell are you doing?" and "Who the hell are you"). I think they tried to explain, but were unable, but luckily enough they spoke enough English to understand "Please get out".
Lucky for me, I thought, I now get to experience the time-honored traveling ritual of 'please can I speak to the manager'.
Through a moderate language barrier, the front desk manager attempted to explain to me that those men were not attempting to steal from me. In fact, I was told, the purpose of them going through my wallet while I was at breakfast was to protect me from having my money stolen!
Several months ago, you see, a guest at the hotel accused housekeeping of having stolen money from the guests wallet while their room was made up. An awkward situation for everyone involved, I can imagine. Following this incident, the hotel came up with a new hotel policy to prevent guests from having their items stolen by housekeeping and also protect housekeeping from being wrongly accused by dishonest guests.
IF A GUEST LEAVES OUT 'VALUABLES' (Wallets, Purses, Jewellery or Electronics - I was never given a clear definition) WHEN HOUSEKEEPING COMES TO MAKE UP YOUR ROOM, THREE SENIOR EMPLOYEES WILL GO THROUGH YOUR 'VALUABLES' AND WRITE A LIST OF EVERYTHING OF VALUE, DOWN TO THE SPECIFIC NUMBER OF COINS & CREDIT CARDS.
If I had not pre-booked 3 nights on Agoda, I would have immediately left upon learning this. The next day, the Manager of the hotel came to find me (as I had requested to speak to them). It is my understanding from that conversation that they intend to continue with this policy of going through a guests things should anything 'of value' be left out of the safe.
I strongly recommend you do not stay at this hotel. Also the breakfast wasn't great and the AC doesn't work during the day on hot days.
