We booked this property via Dragonair Holidays for we were told Shangrila Hotel was full.
We arrived at this property without much high expectations for in the past three years, I didn't have any satisfactory experience with Crowne Plaza in Europe or East/West Coast USA. I was hoping that Crowne Plaza in China can offer a new dimension. But, it was an disappointment.
Location - the merit of the property. It is right in the center of the City east busy shopping and business center. Jusco -- a Japanese Chain department store with supermarket and foodcourt -- is right by the hotel. There are restaurants and shoppings at v. reasonable price around the hotel.
The lobby was cramped and poorly designed, a few couches placed right in front of the revolving door in the main entrance.
Rooms -- The standard room is dated and small, even smaller than a standard room of an equivalent grade hotel in Osaka, Japan. Surprised =( The ventilation in the room was terrible, it's suffocating and too warm for a spring night with an outdoor temperature of 12 Celsius. The technician came by but couldn't help but to suggest us to sleep with an open window or change room. The electric socket was also not working. The heating element of the electric wataer jug was so rusted.like a piece of salvage from the sea. Some other reviews also indicated problems with room.
We were changed into a deluxe room after midnight for the traffic noise was a nuisance with the open window. The room's much spacious and cooler. Still dated without much view. We at least can sleep.
The socket by the working desk in both rooms allow plugs from different countries, no adapter is needed. Bathrobes and slippers are provided.
Bathroom Amenities -- as earlier reviews indicated, the shampoo /bath gel are of low quality and the packaging are v. dated of those in the 1980's offered in China. I assume all Crowne Plaza offer Molton Brown toiletries as in Europe. The shower head is weak and needed a change.
The rooms do need a face=lift refurbishment to stay competitive with the rivals for the Olympics.
Service -- The housekeeping staff on the 24h floor should be commended, the service was swift and detailed.
The concierge desk should have more pamphlets for local tours. Info was only given verbally. English tourist info was scarce. We asked for restaurants suggestion, there was none.
Even you are a Priority Club member, all guests still have to request for newspaper to the room, or else it won't be delivered to the room.
Internet access in the room is free -- a merit.
The lounge offers v. limited drinks and service.
The buffet breakfast is good with a good variety of western and Chinese choices.
Overall --- this is not a 5-star hotel, it is a marginal 4-star.
I will stick with Shangrila in Qingdao.
