A very spacious well-maintained hotel, but it didn’t meet some important expectations.
I had booked a week at the Sheraton for my 12 year old son and myself as a last minute arrangement. The hotel had come very highly recommended from some very experienced family worldwide travelers. In fact, this hotel was the only hotel where they wanted to return out of all their travels. The reviews were outstanding for food, service, activities and tranquility.
While the tour package only included half board, I made a full board arrangement with the hotel when I arrived.
After a long flight from Brussels with a stop in Luxor and then a terrible taxi ride with a driver who would not stop talking trying to sell excursions, entering the hotel was like stepping into another world. I will never forget the smiles of the hotel staff who all greeted me with “Welcome to the Sheraton”. It took a while to arrange a room as they had reserved a king size bed instead of two beds. The room was very nice with a tall ceiling, the hardest mattress I have ever had (but surprisingly comfortable), nice balcony with a view of the pool. The room was a bit of a walk from other parts of the hotel, but the gardens were so nice, that it was an enjoyable stroll.
The hotel grounds were very extensive with wonderful gardens, bridges, canals, lagoons and low-rise buildings. There was a nice health club with steam room, sauna, exercise room, massage, etc.
The hotel had a dive center that was very convenient staffed by very nice people. We used them for a few day trips and while a little on the pricey side, worth the money. In fact the best meal that we had in Egypt was on an all day diving trip consisting of a hot/cold buffet that the boat crew made for our group of 20 using two small portable gas burners. All Egyptian food. It was amazing the product the cook made using such limited facilities.
I had two disappointments with the hotel: food and honoring the full board.
The food varied each night and was beautifully displayed. There were the normal steam table buffet main courses as well as one or two individually cooked main courses. Salads and fruit sections were what one would normally find. Even though each night had it own theme, the food seemed very much the same each night. Local dishes were surprisingly lacking. In fact, breakfast had more local dishes that any other feeding. Again, food was good, but perhaps my expectations were unrealistic. High marks for presentation, normal marks for the food itself. There was always something to eat, but nothing memorable.
The hotel restaurants get better marks, however. Some not too pricey and some pricey, but all with good quality.
The full board arrangement included all meals and drinks and some minor goodies: one massage, use of the health club, one hour paddle boat, etc. However, once an employee found out that I had an unlimited drinks card the service (with just a few exceptions) slowed to a range of none to limited. No, I was never denied a request for another beer, but I after being ignored several times I had to ask the restaurant manager several times to assert my request. Other times, waiters appeared to intentionally avoid including us in their “walk through” servicing tables. Pool side, after the waiters asked me if I wanted anything for several days, I finally asked for a beer, and flashed by full board card. He brought the drink and I gave him a tip of 10 Egyptian pounds. It was the last time anyone pool side asked me if I wanted anything. It was almost like the implementation of a hotel policy regarding the unlimited drinks card – sell it, but don’t service it.
I can’t say that these two disappoints ruined the stay. Not finding fantastic food certainly eliminated a dimension of the trip and the lack of service for the full broad certainly added additional work, but just the same we had a nice stay.
Would I go back? I think so. The hotel clientele didn’t have any of the loud and rude Russians or Italians that some of the other hotel reviews warn about. And many of the staff were very friendly and helpful – especially the deck chair guys, housecleaning, front desk staff and sometimes the waiters. But while I thought that I would add the Sheraton to my list of unforgettable hotels in the world, it is high up on the list, but not in the exceptional class.
