My wife & I stayed here for 2 weeks from the 18/5/12. We chose the PLR mainly due to the excellent reviews on trip advisor.
Our trip started on a sour note based on the awful Thomson Airways flight from Gatwick. 5 hours with no entertainment & and less leg room then Easyjet is disgusting. Contrary to many bad stories on here about arrival at Hurghada airport, all in all it was not too bad. Chaos yes, but similar to most Provincial Asian/ South American airports. Swiftly through the airport and a 'delightful' 40 minute wait for the rest of the tourists staying at the PLR. The transfer takes 45 minutes and you go past some shockingly bad looking hotels. Ali Baba's Palace & Titanic Palace were personal favourites.
Sahl Hasheesh where the hotel is located is a purpose built hotel resort that when complete will have the look and feel of Cancun. It is also home to the speed bump, and there are plenty of those. It is also the worlds biggest hotel building site! We arrived around 9.30pm and we were both pretty tired so our aim was to eat and sleep. Check-in was slick and hassle free. Change of clothes and down to Turqouise Restaurant. First impression was that it was a large soulless box with a lack of natural light. The food was OK, but we were tired and it was late so we tried not to prejudge the quality. Bed time.
This was our first trip to this part of the world & we did not really know what to expect. However it is human nature to benchmark hotels based on previous holidays. We have stayed at some very good hotels such as Veligandu in the Maldives & El Dorado Royale in Yucutan Mexico. We scored those hotels 5 & 5 in previous reviews. PLR was not anywhere near these standards but the price we paid was a fraction, so in value terms the PLR is very good.
The Hotel - Best part of 300 rooms in a U shaped building with the pools in the middle. Buildings and grounds are beautiful but lacked any real Eygptian design or concept which was a shame.
The Beach - This is was a let down but we knew it would be because of previous reviews on here. The sand is desert sand and coral combined. You can't access the sea due to the dead coral upon entry. Still quite a few morons thought it was OK to walk on it. To access the sea you need to walk along the unfinished jetti. At the end you would find either a clear blue pond, a sea of jelly fish or big waves. Sometimes all three at once. The jellys are a nuisance rather then a threat. Once in the water the snorkelling was pretty good. We were told that is is not a patch on Sharm or Taba. Best snorkelling was off to the left where there is a good variety of fish. Never had any problems getting a sun bed. Could do with an extra toilet block as there never seemed to be enough.
The Room - Large and spacious. Daily stocked mini fridge and quite a few tv channels. Only criticism was lack of privacy on balcony.
The Drink - Beer was either Stella (not our version) or Sakara. Both were very nice. The wife liked the rose wine although the red & white were not tried. Soft drinks were Coke, Fanta, Sprite & Dasani Water. Spirits were the equivalent of 'house' spirits found in cheap nightclubs.
The Food - Overall very good. Lots of variety in the buffet. They should however label the desserts to save wastage from trial and error. Turqoise Buffet so needs some natural light, it really is a soulless box. The Chinese was decent as was the Italian. The seafood was average at best.
The Staff - Fantastic. Really friendly and attentive. A real asset to the hotel. The manager was also out and about meeting guests. Never seen this before but I thought that this was first class. Credit where it is due.
The Guests - This is a couples hotel and therefore all the guests were couples. As this is one of the more expensive hotels in the region it was a slightly higher age group and generally well behaved and well mannered set of guests. That might sound snobby but we don't want to spend our holidays with bad mannered chavs.
Brits made up 40% of those staying. The rest were badly dressed russians, Poles, Germans, French & Italians. We really liked the mix as we hate going to Britsh ghettos. It was also nice to share a giggle about other nationals rather then embarrassment of our own.
Stomach Problems - Yes, the trotts. The mrs and i were far to regular for our liking. Quite a few close calls with impending embarrassment. Heat, food, ice, hygiene? All contributed. A high number of guests were also effected. Not pleasant and the worst we have ever been.
Entertainment - Low key. The long bar is a waste of space and could be used better. Too dark and woody.
Overall - 2 weeks is probably about right, but final day is always a bad day. Especially when you get to experience the real bad side of Hurgada airport. Total chaos & queue after queue. Hated every moment of it. And then the joy of a rubbish flight home and an hour in the car.
I would go back to Eygpt but not here. Feel I need to try a few other resorts as the PLR did not make me feel a desire to rush back. It is a very good hotel but needs quite a few tweaks. When the baron hotel opens next door, it will push the PLR to raise its game and polish its overall offering. Great value for money but not a true 5 star. 4 star yes.
