Myself, my partner, our 16 year old daughter and her friend are just home from a terrible 2 weeks at the Sindbad. The reason I am so angry about this is that I was there only in September 2011, loved it, so booked up again as soon as we got home. Last year the staff were polite, experienced and could not do enough for you, this year it was like being at a completely different hotel. There was an extreme staff shortage, their English was extremely poor (last year the staff had excellent English skills) and they were rude to the point of obnoxiousness, not in a jokey way which I understand is 'just their way' but looking the women up and down, licking their lips and on a few occasions touching our girls extremely inappropropriately and giggling amongst themselves like schoolboys which the girls found very upsetting. Three times I was offered illegal substances by the bar staff, as were our teenage daughter and her friend. There was a constant smell of turpentine in the eating areas during mealtimes which I *think* they were using as cleaning fluid (which were filthy and ill equipped due to the staff shortages), there were power cuts on an almost daily basis which was very dangerous if it happened while you were showering and plunged into darkness, it also cut off the air con which was unbearable in 42 degree heat, and all of us ended up with upset stomachs in excess of 5 days because the pool guy was rinsing cups under the tap instead of putting them in the dishwasher between uses, even when we tried to ask him not to (he didn't understand). Often we gave up trying to get drinks anywhere as no one was tending the bars and the queue often got 10 or 12 bodies deep before anyone bothered coming over to serve. We ended up buying soft drinks every day at the shop, completely undermining the point of all inclusive but we gave up waiting on drinks lots of times. The place was also VERY grubby. Tables, bar tops and floors seemed to be constantly sticky and covered in gunk, I rarely saw anyone wipe them down. The linen and towels was changed daily but the surfaces, floor and bathroom in the rooms were not touched in two weeks, and I had to ask every day for toilet roll, it was not automatically replaced, not very pleasant when you have a stomach upset. Also, ice cream was only availiable in one bar in the whole complex and it was nearly always empty or melted. This was not a great problem for us but the guests with smaller children were very upset with this. After a few days when I spoke to the reception staff about what the hell was going on I was simply told 'Sorry, we have lost over 90% of our staff from last year, the new people are still learning'.This enraged me, and I dread to think what the place must have been like in April/May at the start of the season. The new staff also had a terrible habit of asking for tips. We tipped well last year because the staff were fantastic, but not once were we asked, or expected to. I was really offended by being asked, especially when the service was so poor. I am really sorry I have had to write this review, as my first experience here was excellent, but I would hate to see a family have an experience like ours who had booked up for a return journey only to be so badly let down. The trip cost us over £2,800, a huge sum for us that we felt comfortable paying as we thought we were guaranteed a great family holiday. We are devastated. Please do not go to the Sindbad, whether you've been before or not. We will not be back and will be writing to Thomas Cook to try and get this dreadful hotel out of their brochures.
