My Boyfriend and I stayed here for two weeks during the last week of August and first of September 2007, we booked though Thomsons and flew from Nottingham East Midlands with Thomsonfly.
We travelled with another couple of friends who were staying at another resort in sharm.
Having looked at many hotels and hundreds of review we opted for the Sol Y Mar Mirabel Park resort. The complex is made up of three hotel which comprise of the park, club and the beach (which is listed as the JAZ Mirabel Beach). Unlike other hotels the facilities at each of the hotels are not shared and have different wristbands.
We arrived late in the evening following a short transfer, check in was relatively quick. We were shown our rooms from the balcony and made our way through the pool area.
Our room was on the first floor, we had two single beds in the first area then through double doors into the main bedroom, which had a king size bed and led out onto an oversized balcony overlooking the small babies / todlers pool. The room was cleaned daily with towel art left on occasions.
With this being my first holiday since being diagnosed with Coeliacs disease I was extremely worried and careful not to eat the wrong foods, however the head chef couldn't have made things easier for me. He asked me to write down a list of the ingredients I cannot eat one lunchtime and that evening, presented me with a note in arabic which helped me when eating out in Sharm! Each night he took me around telling me what I could and couldn't eat. Being a fussy eater does not help matters and he was only too happy to cook me a plate of fries. I took loaves of part baked prescribed bread, which the staff happily pre-heated for me each morning before toasting. I also took some gluten free pizza bases which he cooked into lovely pizzas for me. The waiting staff are really friendly and genuinely care if you are enjoying the food, the same appiles to all the other staff we encountered.
However on a number of occassions we found other guests being extremely rude to the staff. These people are not there to wait on you hand and foot, if you want that go to somewhere that offers it. The majority of the staff are from ciaro and work 35 days on with 15 days holiday, and then have a terriblt journey home. Please treat them with respect as they do to you. (sorry!)
The entertainment isn't great and the evening can be pretty boring. However the twice weekly beach party is good fun.
The pool is large and you will always find a sun lounger, the pool is divided into sports / activities and relaxing. The pool bar is over the pool which serves drinks and snacks all day. See the Ronaldo lookalike, he is so sweet!
Each day the pare guy will walk aroung the pool, 1-2 day old papers cost about 3-50-4.00 each.
The beach is 5-10 minute walk form the park which is accessed through the 'beach'. We were told that drinks would not be served to us in the 'beach' area, however we did manage to get a few. the beach is ok but you will burn very easily without realising so take care.
There is a little market / shopping area in the 'club' which you can buy pretty much everything you need.
Generally the food and drinks at the hotel are not the best but having spoken to a lot of friendsand family that have also been to Egypt this is typical with most hotels. But hey I guess you dont go away to eat and drink the same things you do at home!
However if you do fancy them, then go into Naama Bay there are loads of international restaurants TGI's, Hard Rock Cafe, McDonalds, KFC etc along with loads more. The Bus Stop bar at Pacha is really cool.
Taxis are the only way really to get into Naama Bay but be warned, is like the wacky races! The journey from the hotel takes around 25mins but negotiate your price first, if possible book it as a return fare, as the first day we went in we used the hotels service and were charged 19 pounds rtn. Then the next time he qouted 35 pounds! In the end we used the blue and white taxis which congregate on the main road at the entrance to the hotel which is what we did, and make sure you bargain with them. We generally paid 12-15 rtn.
As we had planned to go to the Carribbean but due to the uncertainty with the weather at the time we deiceded against it . We booked Egypt as Lee had been there previously and being guaranteed good weather is a must. Overall I really liked Sharm but would say that if you expect a typical all inclusive eat / drink / entertainment at the hotel I feel you will be dissapointed, if however you are prepared to mix the resort with Naama bays food / drink / nightlife I am sure you will have a great time.
If you are looking for guaranteed hot weather, beautiful surroundings you cant go wrong...just dont expect a 5* Carribbean resort.
Hope this helps and sorry to have gone on.
