“The Conrad is ok... but could be much better”
My boyfriend and I have just returned from a 2 week holiday in Sharm el Sheikh. We had an enjoyable break... however we were disappointed with the hotel.
Sharm is a great destination, and I'd definitely recommend it. There's loads to do such as snorkeling, day trips to Cairo or Luxor, quad biking, camel riding etc, or if you prefer to just chill out then the beaches and the Red Sea are gorgeous... and the weather is HOT! On the day we left it must have reached about 37 degrees. I would definitely recommend the day trip to Cairo (by plane) as although it was a long day and Cairo airport is stressful (!) - seeing the Pyramids, the Sphinx and the Egyptian Museum was a highlight of our holiday. We also loved the snorkeling, which you could do v.easily from the end of the hotel's jetty... we saw some fantastic fish!
Anyway... about the Conrad. The hotel is really close to the airport which means a nice short transfer, and it isn't in the flight path - so you're never disturbed by any planes. Check in was efficient and we were quickly taken to our room. We'd paid extra (in advance) for a sea-view room and it was definitely worth it, we had a lovely view of the beach, sea and Tiran Island from our balcony, and were a 30 second walk down some stairs to the beach. However our room wasn't great. The room, and bathroom particularly, needed refurbishment. This is not something that affected our holiday - but our tour operator (First Choice) advertised a 4 star plus hotel - which I don't feel it is.
There are 2 buffet restaurants at the hotel, which essentially serve the same food. Breakfast was fine, what you'd expect really. Lunch was nice - particularly the salads, bread, freshly made pizzas and pasta dishes. Dinner, however, was disappointing. If you are going for a week, then you'll probably be ok but if you are going for 2 weeks you will start to find the food bland and very samey. Neither of us are fussy eaters, but we got a bit fed up of the food on offer at the buffets. It seemed to be well cooked, it was just the lack of variety and flavour. There is an Italian restaurant that you need to book, and you get a choice of 4 dishes such as steak, which is freshly cooked for you, and which we thought was very nice - but you have to pay for drinks (not part of your all-inclusive) which is a shame. And likewise if you are willing to pay - there is an a la carte menu with a good choice of dishes - but none of that is included in the all-inc deal. There are a few things like this at the Conrad, that contributed to us feeling that the "all-inclusive" deal was not as good value as we'd experienced before.
One annoying thing is that you are only able to get free bottled water at the buffet restaurants at meal times. Water in the mini bar wasn't free, and the bars only provided a cup of water. Considering the hot climate - this isn't ideal, and when we spoke to people from other hotels the Conrad appeared to be the only one to do this, e.g. other hotels had fridges stocked full of cold bottled water from which you could help yourself.
We felt the hygiene at the bars wasn't good enough, they either washed the (plastic) cups poorly leaving tap water in them, or didn't bother to wash them at all. We even saw a barman top up some dregs of red wine and send it out with a waiter to be given to someone else... not good! We both fell ill with tummy troubles, which I understand is common in Egypt - however we didn't feel that the hotel were doing their upmost to avoid this happening.
We spoke to out First Choice rep about the various issues that we were unhappy with, which we suspected others had complained about as she always had an answer (and the brochure) ready! She promised to follow some of these issues up but we felt that nothing ever came of it - the service just wasn't good enough. For example, we were told to be in reception for 4am on the day we were going to Cairo. Our coach actually picked us up at 5.20am... people from other hotels said that they'd had a note under their door to inform them the night before... however we had not! We sound like typical Brits.. always moaning (!!) but on our last holiday we didn't even see our rep as we never had any need to speak to them.
Finally, in terms of the evening entertainment, this runs on a weekly cycle so again if you are on a 2 week break, it gets a bit boring. Although the animation team are v.friendly. Naama Bay is only a 5 minute (£5) journey so if you want more of a lively night out then you can go there. There is about an even mix of Brits and Russians at the Conrad, so we met some other Brits who were lovely - and made the evenings a lot of fun.
In summary then... if you have already booked your holiday at the Conrad then I would say don't worry, you will have a fab holiday because it is a great destination and the hotel is ok. However if you haven't yet booked - I would say (from chatting to people on our trip to Cairo) that there are better hotels in Sharm... so I'd look around at others to be honest.
