My girlfriend and I stayed at the Sunrise Diamond for a week in November – all we wanted was a week of sunshine and relaxation. We had these boxes very much ticked by the end of the week.
We booked through Thomas Cook, who were an absolute pain and a huge let down. But we won’t let that detract from the experience we had with the hotel, which overall, was pretty decent.
We arrived late on a Monday evening, greeted by welcoming staff and a really clean and presentable hotel. We had booked a ‘standard garden view room’, but were told when we checked in that we’d been moved to “the best room in the resort” – we didn’t question this, and were taken via buggy down towards the beach to what looked like a villa, right on the sea front. This larger building was then split into 3 rooms, and ours was on the end. (Beach Deluxe Rooms).
The room was a very spacious size, with a king size bed, plenty of storage space, huge wardrobes, perfect bathroom with shower and a bath, minibar, safe, and patio doors opening out to overlooking the sea front. Our main door was to the rear, which linked out directly to the main pool.
On our first night we were welcomed to the main ‘Half Moon Restaurant’, and staff quickly began introducing themselves. It then became apparent that of the 400+ rooms, the hotel was at near capacity and we were 1 of only 3 British couples in the resort, with the majority being Russian. We didn’t think this would be a huge issue over the week, and to be fair, it wasn’t, but some of the Russian contingency were pretty rude and very selfish – luckily, a large portion of these were gone part way through the week.
We wondered whether this may have been why we were upgraded, but weren’t bothered. The staff seemed pleased to see a British couple, and did very well at looking after us for the week, and it gave them an opportunity to test their English – and we shouldn’t take this for granted; the attention was a lot over the week, but it was nice to be looked after.
There are 3 pools at the hotel – a family pool, a quiet pool, and the main activity pool. We only ever used the main pool, as it was nearer to our room. All 3 had bars, and the main pool had an animations team. We didn’t really pay too much attention, but they pumped out music throughout the day, and had plenty going on – ideal if you’re looking for something to keep you occupied. There is also a beach which is split into 2 sections, with plenty of space to chill out, and a pontoon that leads out over the coral, if you fancy some snorkelling.
In terms of the food offerings, there is the main Half Moon Restaurant, the Italian Restaurant and a Beach Restaurant too. For breakfast, there was plenty of hot offerings and continental style food too. For lunch, there was mainly chips and burgers as well as salads, and for dinner there were varieties of hot and cold food too. With the Russians being around, getting food on our plates was a bit of an issue, as they piled their plates higher than you can possibly imagine, and sometimes it would take a while for replenishment – but it did come. We found that holding on until a little later in the evening for dinner was a better shout, missing the rush.
Worth bearing in mind that the Egyptian style of cooking is totally different to British ways, and although the appearance of some food offerings may differ from what we’re used to, it didn’t mean that it wasn’t cooked to the highest of standards. It all still made for a good meal. Our only gripe was that throughout the week, there wasn’t too much of the hot/meat offerings that changed drastically from night-to-night. We wondered whether this was again due to who was staying at the hotel, but we maybe would have liked to have tried something totally different each night. This probably wouldn’t have mattered to most guests.
There is also the Kandahar Restaurant which is a paid-for Indian on the roof terrace – we were fortunate to be invited to a complimentary dinner on our Thursday night, and we wondered if this again was due to us being the British couple – but it was a great gesture, and a fantastic meal. It normally works out around 15Eu, and would have been good value for money.
We couldn’t fault the restaurant staff at all. They’re all super-friendly, and do their best for you. If you have a problem, or it appeared something had run out, all you had to do was ask, and someone was on the case.
This seemed to be their way throughout the whole resort, mind. We woke up one morning to no electricity in our room. Not an issue; we got ready for breakfast, informed Guest Relations, and by the time we were finished, our room was back with power.
Guest Relations were a great source of info too, where our travel provider were pretty lacking.
Around the pool during the day, we probably would have preferred to have been left to our own devices, and to carry on with what we were doing – but each day we were approached by providers of excursions, spa treatments, restaurant bookings, diving school etc. Towards the start of the week, this was happening 5 or 6 times a day, and towards the end, a lot fewer. Although it was getting to be a bit of a nuisance, the majority of these guys just wanted to chat to us because we were English, so we cant really take that for granted – in some ways it was nice to have the attention; just not the push of a sale on the end!
There is an amphitheatre in the resort where they host entertainment in the evening. We thought we’d try it out on our first night, but where it was mainly the Russians, none of the speaking was in English. This meant that we didn’t bother with any for the rest of the week. The only problem was the amphitheatre was loud, and our room was located near to it. From 9:30 to 11ish each evening, it was easily heard from our room, and when we fancied an early night after a long day, it didn’t really work.
Had we been there another week, or had the balance of nations been a little more equal, we probably would have headed down there again.
Overall, our week at the Sunrise Diamond was a really enjoyable one, and the staff helped to make it what it was. It was my 3rd consecutive year in Egypt and it still lived up to expectations.
