Our Honeymoon at Maravu Plantation was amazing! It is absolutley gorgeous on top of having wonderful staff! We were greeted with refreshing drinks that were decorated beautifully by the staff at Maravu. Everyone welcomed us. When we were taken to our room we were amazed, it was perfect! The staff did everything possible to make our stay perfect, we got to see and do everything we wanted to and then some! We even got to experience a local Rugby Tournament guided by Albert. Our tour guides from the resort was the best! Panaei and Albert took us to the best places and we got to see and experience all the local culture! Panaei took us to the Bouma Waterfalls where we hiked to the top and then swam with the locals at the end of our hike! Everyday at every meal we were greeted by Tracy who made sure we had everything during our meals to make us comfortable! The food served was amazing, the daily choices were that of a 5 star resturaunt! The Fijian Feast and local dancing one night was so much fun and the food was wonderful! Maria and Titlia at the reception desk were so great, anything we wanted we got and anywhere we wanted to go they arrange it for us! Thank you to everyone at Maravu incluclind Panaei, Albert, Tracy, Maria and Titilia - we will miss you and cant wait to return to Tavueni real soon!

We went to Maravu for our honeymoon. We booked our stay there after reading reviews on TripAdvisor and pricing out the alternatives. Overall, Maravu was by far the biggest bang for our buck.

We were picked up at the Matei airport by staff and taken directly to the resort only 5 minutes away, where we had a short orientation before being shown to our bure. The bure was well kept and it had flow petals scattered throughout. The staff had also started some nice Fijian music playing before we entered. Our first impression was excellent.

Now, a word about the accommodations. There are numerous bures scattered throughout the grounds. They are spread out enough to ensure adequate privacy. Ours was a honeymoon bure and sported an outdoor jacuzzi and shower (though there was also an indoor shower and restroom). The bure itself was clean and plenty spacious. These are essentially standalone cabins with nice wood floors and furniture. There were very few guests (22 at the high point) at the time we went, which afforded us an extra helping of privacy. I would imagine that the place would have more depending on the timing of your visit.

Pest control is something the management takes very seriously. Given the type of structure and the climate, expect to see lizards (e.g., small geckos) running about. We didn't notice very many insects inside, no doubt due at least in part to the lizards. One evening we saw what we thought was a small mouse. We have been assured that measures are being taken to remedy the situation. We figure that staying out in the middle of a lush jungle is bound to come with its share of fauna, but we had surprisingly few encounters other than the friendly dogs that are owned by the resort and roam about the grounds. (Say "hi" to Max and Blaise for us!)

The resort itself boasts beachfront property just across the street. The beach cafe was closed at the time we went (the beginning of the dry season), but it was just the same to us since we're partial to deserted beaches. Fiji had just finished its wet season, and we had light rain about every other day. This was just as well for us, since I like the rain and my wife likes the sun ;)

The activities were fun and interesting, though you'll need to be a bit flexible if you're going to get to do everything you want to do. The staff will help organize individual and group trips. If there are conflicts or cancellations due to rain, they will let you know and offer alternatives. We often overheard another party inquiring about an activity and decided to join them, so stay alert when in the common dining area.

The food was very good. We've lived overseas before, and we felt the food was above average for a restaurant in a non-Western country trying its best to provide Western cuisine. Neither of us like seafood, and there wasn't a single day that we didn't have an alternative. Each morning, you'll be treated to a buffet breakfast, during which you will select your lunch and dinner choices off of the day's menu. This makes lunch and dinner painless, which is a must after afternoon activities such as a hike up a jungle mountain.

The staff was always courteous and always attentive. They learned our names immediately and used them frequently, which of course made us felt very special indeed. The resort has plenty ways to relax as well as many opportunities for adventure. I'd recommend it to anyone, though I'd say that it's more perfect for couples than for entire families and small children.

Bottom Line: We did not want to leave.

Sounds a bit cliche? We traveled as a Family! Now I bet that doesn't sound as cliche anymore! Lol.

I am a twenty four year old and visited the resort with my parents and my 18 and 22 year old sisters.

We had an AMAZING time. It was everything we could possibly expect from a sensational vacation.

Unforgettable meals three times a day- absolutely delicious food that we wondered how the meal we were about to enjoy could possibly stack up to the meal before- and it always did! The meals were so varied and delicious that we found ourselves counting down the time until we could sit down and dine again!

A homemade cake for my birthday! Chocolate with pink frosting- the BEST cake I have ever had- and I have eaten quite a few cakes ! = ))

The island itself? Gorgeous. Taveuni is a special special place- Absolutely stunning- green and lush- the water is crystal clear-

It's the kind of place you vacation to when you just want to BE. There is so much natural beauty all around you- there is no need for anything else to keep you "entertained" - (tv, video games, shopping ; ) again- see line three for who is writing this review. ; ))

Activities are abundant there- the resort provides more than enough to keep you entertained- a waterfall hike, a snorkeling excursion to a PRIVATE island- a trip into town to visit a mass, a beach BBQ where we played volleyball with the staff (and made new friends)... and much more that we didn't get a chance to try.

The bures are darling and very special- private, cozy, and beautiful. My sisters and I shared one- and we had plenty of room. (If there hadn't been enough room for us- it would be very clear!!! lol)

The beds are comfortable- I slept wonderfully. The bures themselves are just gorgeous- the dark wood floors, etc/ so nice!

and of course the showers- super private outdoor showers- that is just the BEST! I've never experienced anything like that- Absolute bliss!

Ok, and now, I think it is time for me to say a bit about the staff- I will try to capture just how I feel about these individuals that made my stay just amazing. First of all, no matter what I say, I couldn't possibly do them justice- there are just far too many ways I was touched by these special, caring people.

First- I miss them!!! So many of these individuals, I would return to Fiji again just to see again. The true kindness we were shown isn't put into words- it really can only be understood by one who has been to Taveuni and Maravu and has the opportunity to know what this is like- I've never seen this honest and true kindness in the US- The people at Maravu are simply Kind Souls. It comes from such a sincere place that anyone who has visited hotels and dealt with a kind staff can see that the type of treatment one experiences at Maravu is something else- It is just so sincere and lovely- it is worth the stay just to get to know these kind employees of Maravu. Those who visit will see what I mean- it is truly something special that I don't have the words to capture.

I am so grateful to have had the opportunity to meet the individuals at Maravu Plantation and catch a glimpse into what true kindness is all about.

Bottom Line: I loved it. I want to go back. I want to hurry up and get married so I can have my honeymoon there. I can't wait to go back. I think it would be the absolute ideal place to have a honeymoon- plenty of activities to bond- a special unique unforgettable setting, great accommodations, superb hearty dining and a staff that will treat you as if they've known you (and loved you) forever.

Thanks for reading this. As you can probably get the gist of- I would whole heartedly recommend Maravu Plantation, Taveuni to my dearest friends. Thanks again! @--)--

We originally stayed at Maravu in 2000 for a friend's wedding and had a truly wonderful time. We returned to Taveuni in 2005 and decided to try another accomodation, Coconut Grove, which was also great, with a great beach, but much smaller. We returned with friends this trip who had come with us on the previous trips, who suggested we stay again at Maravu. We had the same room as we had stayed in in 2000, and an outdoor shower and jacuzzi had been added, which was lovely, but it seemed as if the rest of the bure had not had much other attention in 8 years. It was definitely clean, and for the most part comfortable (the bed was old and very hard and uncomfortable) but things seemed tired and worn. There were loose windows, worn sheets, towels and bedding, and the deck needed to be restained. the palm fronds on the roof were either mostly missing or broken. The pool could use a cleaning and the night lights in it were broken. We thought about having a moonlight swim, but when we found the pool full of Cain toads, decided otherwise.

The staff are wonderful, kind, helpful and truly generous with their time. I think their kindness and friendliness along with the wonderful menus at Maravu and simply being on Taveuni was the best part of our trip.

We always go to Bouma Falls and have enjoyed every minute of the outing. We also returned to Waitabu Marine Preserve for guided snorkelling from the people of Waitabu Village who also made us very welcome and have added new bulldings for the purpose. The beach there is not to be missed, used in the filming of Blue Lagoon 2 it is secluded and pristine.

The climb back and forth up the hill to the beach made it difficult for me to enjoy Maravu this trip as age and illness have taken their toll, but the snorkelling is marvelous, and the staff who took us out on excursions were great. I would recommend some service available ( possibly golf carts?) for those unable to enjoy the beach because of the climb up the hill.

I would also suggest that the resort institute some sort of dress code (i.e. shirts) for the dining room as we were subjected to some guests coming to dinner in their dive suits, who pulled them down to the waists. It is a fairly formal dining room!!!

I think the management should seriously look at refurbishing things if they wish to keep up their reputation. We love Taveuni, and the people of the island, many of whom work at Maravu, nothing needs changing when it comes to staff, they are marvelous.

It is unlikely we will return to Maravu unless we hear of changes

Management Response

(Management representative)

We thank JuneBug3 for her recent review of Maravu and have taken her comments to heart. Unfortunately, her visit to Maravu happened immediately prior to some major changes and improvements at the resort. In the past two month, Maravu has instituted many improvements to the resort, including replacing all of the linens, sheets, pillows and pillow cases with new items, installing new thatch roofing on all bures, sanding and varnishing the furniture in most bures, exchanging or upgrading the furniture in the restaurant and lounge, updating approximately half of the existing lighting, exchanging the louver window frames, upgrading current and purchasing new furniture for the beach and pool, and more! Maravu is also in the process of sanding and varnishing the native hardwood floors, and continues to paint and touchup wood at any corners and edges. These improvements and renovations had been scheduled for some time, and we are sure that she understands that getting supplies, furniture, and items delivered to an outer island of Fiji is quite time consuming. We are very proud of the changes and improvements we have made at the resort, and would love to invite her for a return visit to see our improvements.
As for the walk to our private beach, we have made every effort to make the short trail accessible and easy to use. There are steps from some of our bures, and a path from the main resort area to our beach. Life in the tropics can create many interesting situations, including our local ‘wildlife’. Toads do come out at night, not just at Maravu, but throughout Taveuni and Fiji. Most of our guests get a big kick out of seeing the toads. In relation to the dress code, we are proud to say that we do not have a strict dress code for our guests. We like to embrace the philosophy that “Life is too short to get dressed up for dinner”. With that said, it was completely inappropriate that some of our guests arrived to dinner in wetsuits, and the operations manageress did actually had a talk with them about it.
Again, we hope that JuneBug3 plans a return visit to Maravu so that we may show off all of our improvements, and allow her to enjoy yet another magical Maravu experience.

“Simply AMAZING!”

Maravu Plantation Resort

I stayed at Maravu with my fiance from July 2nd to the 9th. We stayed in a Honeymoon Suite, and we very pleased with our choice of Maravu. Of all the places I've traveled in the Carribean, and Mexico, nothing could compare to the outstanding customer service we received at Maravu. The staff all knew us by name, it was great! Here is a little briefing on our experience.

The Food: There was a breakfast buffet every morning with someone who would make you eggs to order. The lunch and dinner were both three course meals. You would order for the day at breakfast. I can not complain about the food, we were both very satisfied. The drinks, however, were not included. They were priced decently, but we purchased a bottle of wine and some liquor and brought it along with us. It worked out well, as we had a fridge in our room.

The Room: We got a Honeymoon Suite, and it was worth it! Although the views from the treetop bures looked amazing. We had an outdoor shower as well as an outdoor jacuzzi tub. That is what sold me on Maravu. It was spacious, and comfortable, although we did not spend much time in the bure. The only complaint I have is that it was not beachfront. You had to cross the street to get there. It was not a big deal, but to see the sunset, you have to walk across the street (depending on which bure you are in).

The Staff: Like I said, the staff was absolutely amazing! I have no complaints at all. They treat you like family, and just that experience alone makes it worth it.

The Tours: We did the Lavena Coastal Walk and a half day trip to the Bouma Falls. The Bouma Falls are beautiful, but it is a little hike to the second waterfall. Make sure you bring SNEAKERS and BUG SPRAY! The Coastal Walk was definatly worth it!!! We did not have enough time to do Honeymoon Island, but if you have time, take advantage of it! I heard great things. Also, horsebackriding is free everyday, as well as kayaking, both were a lot of fun.

The Trip to Taveuni via Air Fiji: The trip was a little scary for me, as I've never been on such a small plane before, but the views are amazing! Keep in mind when you book online, all fares are in Fijian Dollars. The only airlines who fly to Taveuni are Air Pacific and Air Fiji. Its about an hour flight.

Overall I would highly recommend the resort, just remember to bring bug spray, toothpaste and sneakers! Feel free to contact me if you have any other questions or want to see some pictures.
