My wife and I went to Gambia last December (2009) for the first time. we had a fantastic time, the people, the weather and the food (plus the Hotel) were all excellent.
We too did not want to book tours through the Tour Operator, and we (me rather hesiitantly) walked into Arch Tours. There we were met by two regular UK visitors to Gambia (and Arch tour customers - of course) who quickly assured us that Arch were the right people to book our Tours with.
We did, and we booked two and we shared our trips with other people from the UK including the two people we had first met in Arch Tours, before we were greeted by the Boss. The two people from the UK were good fun, and were doing trips they had already undertaked with Arch Tours during previous visits to Gambia.
We visted Senegal / Crocodiles / Lamin Lodge / Paradise Beach but to name only a few.
The boys (and Girls) at Arch Tours were great!
Quite honestly we could not fault any part of our Gambian Experience Holiday or any of the Tours with Arch.
Exellent value for money - all round.
Can't wait to get back there again in December 2010, when we plan to book at least 2 more Arch Tours (probably the Senegal Safari and the Roots Tour).
Finally, if you fly with Thomas Cook , two people are allowed an extra 10 Kilo (1 bag) luggage (in total) allowance to take bits and pieces (pens / pencils/ rubbers / sweets) etc for the kids at the schools or the orhanages or just to hand them (or throw them) from the jeeps when out with Arch Tours.
