Had a room over looking the pool. Room was large with a couple of armchairs, wardrobe, table, sink and old fridge. Bathroom was o.k....hot water always available.
Air con worked fine. I guess you should not compare against hotels in Europe and all in all it was fine and would recommend it. The room was cleaned daily, maybe not to European standards but is was cleaned and the bed made. Mattresses were the usual 3 inch thick for India and adequate. Towels were old and hard but no big deal. The breakfast was fine, self service and cornflakes, rolls, fruit and eggs...anyway you liked, oh and obvioulsy juice, tea and coffee. All the staff were very friendly and keen to do a good job. The hotel location was great, right on the main road 10 minutes from the beach. As at Feb 2010 a large Kingfisher (650ml) was 70 Rupees (£1) in most bars, a decent curry with bread and rice for about £3 or less, free sun loungers at the beach if you ate in a shack, if not charged 50 Rupees. The hotel is in Candolim and I reckon the resort is better than Calangute or Bagga in that it is not sprawling. Worth catching the bus to Mapusa (pronounced Mapsa) market on a Friday, about 40 minutes each way on a bus, 10 Rupees per person each way. Newtons supermarket 5 minutes along the road from the hotel has everything you might need if you forget it from home. Do plug converters for about £1 so if you want to use hairdryer etc no problem in the hotel. So, all in all the Magnum was fine, not flash but basic and adequate, the locals were friendly, most things dirt cheap and hard not to have a good time. Loads of restaurants, recommend the Stonehouse, turn left out of the hotel and a 10 minute walk, nice outside setting and great food. If you buy Duty Free at the airport coming home they don't take Rupees, you can change them back to Sterling at the airport but crap rate so keep some Sterling for the shop......200 fags about £10, 5 pouches of Golden Virginia £13 and cheap spirits. We brought maleria tablets from home but you can buy tablets locally and would work out about 50p per person per day or even less. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!
