After a "full on" week starting in Delhi taking in Ranthambore and ending up in Jaipur - we flew from Jaipur to Goa to stay for 8 nights and chill at the Kenilworth - Kingfisher airlines knocked us sideways for service by the way - Anyway -
The Kenilworth - We were greeted by building work on arrival - our first room was on top of it - So I asked to be relocated - this became a wind up - as no one wanted to solve the problem hence it took numerous phone calls - the second room was on the other side of the same building work but worse - anyway they got it right by the time I had made a nuisance of my self enough to get a 3rd room change - success - but a pain in the.
I let Kenilworth management know that it would have been so much better to have advised us of the building work in the numerous emails that we had exchanged in the 6 months prior - which was the length of time we spent planning the trip - and never once did they. Shame Kenilworth.
I did get a reduction off the bill for the aggro - but this process took umpteen calls and meetings - the money wasnt the issue - it was genuinely grief I didnt go there for.
In my opinion - The Kenilworth is prententous and over rated - why - because service standards are poor - however rooms are clean - food is plentiful and fair - pools and gardens are nice.
The breakfasts were a good start to the day - chefs friendly - sadly let down by young, inexperienced, untrained and very cheap local waiting staff. Everything that involved something simple getting done became a mundance chore. Kenilworth could fix this.
The water sports facilities were not as advertised - no windsurfing gear at all - and what it did have was run by a local and charged out at extortionate rates.
One day coming back up from the beach I was "told off" by a senior jobsworth member of staff - for taking my sandy feet through the kiddy paddling pool - I drew her attention to the four empty glass beer bottles (with plastic cups) that were within feet of the pool - and let her know that as a parent - I would be happy to pick sand out of my daughters toes any day of the week - in preference to broken glass.
What was more annoying was that the gates out to the beach are locked at 7PM - There are signs up saying words to the effect that you will be lucky if you dont drown, get mugged, murdered, or die of botchelism - eating out as the rest of the worlds food hygeine is improper and gues what - the sign advised that the Kenilworths wasnt.
The reality is that there are local council licensed shacks and restaurants that the Kenilworth dont want punters to experience - as they have to compete.
They all charge prices a fifth of the Kenilworth - Zeebops by the sea being one - which is just crackingly good - The only thing you will die of at these establishments is warm smiles, friendly service from genuine local people who do want your business and do want you to come back.
The Kenilworth doesnt have this - and should have the balls not to play these "tourist fear mindgames" and start to re-examine thier value proposition, taking a leaf from the locals - as its clear the locals are taking the custom from the Kenilworth - and the smarter ones have even built thier own guest houses to lure you back and enjoy thier warm hospitaility.
I put all this down on my feedback form and weeks later recieved a patronising letter telling me all my comments were valid and had been taken on board - Cobblers !
The ultimate reason why I wont be going back to the Kenilworth was the triplicate printed invoice for 18p that I was presented whilst loading up the taxi with our bags - We had done a full check out and coughed up - and between checking out and leaving - I confess - my wife pilfered the mini bar for a box of juice - not a henious crime I know but one I am ashamed to admit.
Feeling like I had been "nailed" - I gave the bloke a 100 rupee note and told him to keep the change - and keep the Kenilworth !
