This family run hotel doesn't have a 'family' atmosphere. Its a clean place, we got 2 big rooms at a discount for 1,450 rupees per night but I'd probably would not stay here again.
Hot water doesn't last long and he turns off wifi when he goes to bed. His staff makes food however it is restaurant-priced. I think a 500 rupees room right on the south gate of Taj is comparable to Sai Home Stay.
When I inquired with the owner about the home stay, he said that the Taj is a 15-minute walk from his house, however, it's actually more like a 30-minute walk as I walked to see the sunrise - I am a New Yorker so am used to walking, but the 15-minute walking proximity was deceptive on his part to show how far he is from the Taj. He is also in a residential area - no Resto or auto riskhaws are easily accessible. He speaks very good English and the hospitality venture is only 3-months old as of February 2, 2012.
We stayed 2 nights; we were catching an 11:30pm train on our last day in Agra and upon checkout at 10am (which he didn't inform us about until the morning of) we were able to hang out in his lounge area. Hospitality level decreased a bit upon check out as he'd only let us use the 'workers toilet,' which has no lock, nor does the door shut entirely. Internet was cut off all day.
Not worth the money nor did we experience a 'home' environment. And oh, if child labor is a concern, this definitely isn't a place for you. He speaks to his child servants nicely in front of us but I caught him yelling at them when he didn't realize we could hear him. Free pick up from train but ur likely to get the same driver who will charge about 600 -650 rupees but will negotiate down to 500-550, he's commissioned by him and the free pick up charge is built in to the day tour if u get from him. Taj Mahal, west side entrance is an easy walk so don't let him deter u from walking there. The guest lounge room is locked, so we couldn't just go in there as we wished -really not a home environment. Towels we used for 2 days were hung to dry instead of washing as they were preparing for the next guests to check in to the same room we were just rushed out of. And oh, there's also a scary guard dog, so one can't really be 'free' at the house.
