We recently spent 5 nights at the Ramada Hotel in Nusa Dua/Benoa, and it was wonderful!!! When we left, I cried. So that should be enough for everyone to understand that there was absolutely nothing that I disliked about the hotel.
Our trip to Bali was a rather ‘belated’ honeymoon (after 4 years of marriage....), but our travel agent had nonetheless declared us as honeymooners, so we were welcomed by a heart made of flowers on the bed and a honeymoon-cake – a gesture I considered very sweet and which immediately warmed my heart towards the hotel.
The hotel buildings are situated in a quite large hotel complex, from most of the rooms one has an amazingly beautiful view over the swimming pool and/or palm trees and a sweet little river/pond (try and avoid the rooms that face into the other direction, I had the impression they basically only face the wall enclosing the grounds and some trees) . There are also some one- and two bedroom villas, with their own swimming-pool, but I can offer no comment on them.
The rooms are spacious, tastefully decorated and very clean, you get two complimentary water bottles and fresh fruit every day. The bed is king-size, it must have been made to fit at least 3 persons! Bed sheets and towels were changed every day if you desired. The staff is amazingly friendly, always there to help you (if you hand the ‘do not disturb’ sign in front of the room, no one disturbs you). One night, after my husband was in pain from a bad sunburn and I went in search of yoghurt (said to help in these cases), the staff immediately went into a frenzy of finding yoghurt even though the breakfast stuff was not set out yet, and brought it free of charge.
The breakfast buffet is good, has quite a large variety and coffee/tea refills keep coming.
The hotel itself has two swimming pools (not very big, but also quiet and relaxing), a beautiful one within the hotel complex, with pool bar and happy hour (nice), the other pool is across the street, next to the beach. There are also two hotels, the one in the hotel with more ‘European’ cuisine, the other (Tao) next to the beach, very fancy with Asian cuisine. Both restaurants offer good quality and once again the staff makes you feel as if you’re a king (especially in Tao – I fell in love with the place). The spa also offers great relaxing programmes, the one-hour massage is cheap and wonderful, the girls are very friendly and sweet, yet respectful, and do their job admirably well.
The only two negative things about the hotel were that the hotel is located almost at the end of the village, so you must walk a bit if you want to get to the few shops and second, the beach in front of the hotel, not for swimming. But, the hotel offers a free shuttle to another beach in the morning (and pick-up in the afternoon) as well as another shuttle (not free) to Kuta. Besides, renting a van with a driver for a whole day is very cheap (about 18 Euros for the whole day, including gas etc., and the driver took us wherever we wanted and waited for as long as we wanted).
Benoa/Nusa Dua itself has not much to offer besides restaurants (some good ones- try Bumba for traditional Indonesian cuisine: pricy but worth it) and hotels (so the secluded location of the hotel does not really matter), but on the other hand one can either spend the whole time in the hotel and imagine one has been placed into a tropical paradise, or explore the island, either by participating in tourist tours or alone, with a rented van.
My husband and I enjoyed our stay in Bali and want to return, and we will definitely go back to Ramada Benoa hotel! It’s far enough from touristy Kuta to offer serene and enjoyable vacations, yet near enough to offer easy and affordable access to nightlife. And the spectacular grounds are still constantly in my mind’s eyes. Yes, there might be more fancy hotels in Benoa, with sea view etc., but I believe the value one gets for one’s money at Ramada Benoa is more than excellent. So, go, help Ramada Benoa with its gracious manners stay on its feet despite the bomb attacks and the declining tourist rates!
