I cant believe how many bad reviews this place has had, we just spent 10 days there and would have to say that overall it was great!!
True it is not an 'authentic Bali experience', it is a reasonably priced resort, so yes the rooms are on the small side, and they are decorated in a more Western style than other places in Bali. That said we felt the room was plenty big enough, the facilities were great- big comfy bed, wifi (best to use during the morning, it is a tad slow at night... but it is free after all.) There are flat screen tv's with 22 channels, no dvd player in rooms, but there is a movie channel, or the option of using the player in the lounge (which also has a computer and printer which are free to use) There is a mini fridge, tea and coffee facilities, and the bathrooms are really nice (we chose a bath, which was HUGE) Not sure what the smell was that others are complaining of, I actually thought the bathrooms were really clean and smelt fine.
Our room was located by the road and we didn't have any problems with traffic noise, even though we were there over the weekend, and also when a party was being held at a nearby resort.
The pool at the resort is really nice and spotlessly clean, with lounge chairs on the desk beside.
The restaurant was clean, and offered a good breakfast between 7.30 and 11. The options were tea, coffee, two types of juice, toast, two types of cereal, bacon, eggs, ham, sausage, nasi goreng, fresh fruits, cooked bananas, a small range of pastries, and then daily specials like cake, coconut bananas etc. For us that was plenty of choice, especially given that it is included in the price. For lunch and dinner the restaurant was a bit pricey, however there are 3 restaurants within 50m of the resort, all of which offer good fare.
We found most of the staff spoke reasonably good English, and all were very friendly and obliging.
Y Resort is a 15 minute walk to Ubud, with rice fields and little shops along the way. You also cross a beautiful gorge with a river at the bottom, which is beautiful. It is down hill going into town, so walking home is a bit strenuous but we walked most times. The road is quite narrow and I would recommend having a torch at night. Otherwise there is a free shuttle every two hours, or at your request for 10000Rp per person. The standard drop off/pick up is the temple, however you can request to be dropped anywhere in Ubud (or further afield at a higher fee) The pick up can be a little hit and miss, they forgot us twice, but if you walk across to the tourist info (just across from the temple) you can call the resort for free.
If you are looking for a reasonably priced base to explore Ubud then I would recommend Y Resort with no hesitation.
Ask for a room with a bath- same price but a larger room!
